I was expecting a FedEx with a client check yesterday to be delivered before 10:30. It hadn’t come. At about 3:15 my dog uttered a low growl next to me, and then the bridge alarm sounded and I looked out the window to see a man talking toward the house about 150 yards away. By the time I went to the main door I saw he wore a FedEx uniform.
I said, “Are you FedEx? This was supposed to be here five hours ago. Did you walk from Memphis?”
He said, “We’re still having major backups. You should have been informed.”
“Why are you walking, anyway? Where’s your truck?”
“I didn’t trust it on your bridge.”
“That bridge is the only entry to my property so it’s approved for fire engines and 18-wheelers. Did you think a FedEx truck would destroy it?”
“Well, you can never be too careful.”
Yes, you can be too careful, when you unnecessarily fear minor obstacles. You can walk 300 years that you don’t have to, and perhaps meet some wildlife you’d be better off not meeting (geese are vicious). The same applies to our businesses. You CAN be too careful and, when you are, you’ll wind up trailing the pack. Next time I’ll request UPS “next morning” delivery.
