3 Tools To Share Medical Information With Your Family

So, you’ve decided to share your medical information with your family.

The reasons may vary, from helping you keep track of important details such as appointments, medications, etc. to taking care of logistical paperwork.Whatever the reason may be, we can all agree that some of the most sensitive information tends to be found in medical records and clinicians’ notes. If you are not sure where to start or how to begin sharing your medical information, here are three tools to get you started:

  1. InfoSAGEshort for ‘Information Sharing Across Generations, is an online tool designed to help families communicate and coordinate medical care. InfoSAGE can help families keep track of appointments, tasks, and ensure that all family members who need to see a message, do. It has some helpful features like:
    • It allows you to simultaneously share but also selectively withhold medical information.
    • You can share information, including a list of prescriptions or coming appointments, but control who
is in the network and how much each person can see.
    • Example: Viagra prescription can be kept private, but a key caregiver can be allowed to see a prescription for supplemental vitamins.
  1. OpenNotes- “is an international movement dedicated to making health care more open and transparent by urging doctors, nurses, therapists, and others to share their visit notes with patients”. They are committed to spreading the availability of open visit notes and studying the effects. They have great resources on their website such as:
    • If your doctor is not sharing your notes, OpenNotes provide a template of a letter you can download to ask your doctor for open notes.
    • An interactive map to see which health systems are already sharing notes. You can search for an institution in your state that shares medical notes with patients.
  1. Mana was voted by the public at large as having the most innovative and user-friendly portal designs in NYC. Patients whose providers are participating in the program have online access to their personal healthcare data, including lab results, lists of medications, radiology reports, and other information about procedures and medical conditions. Much like InfoSage, patients will also be able to decide who can access their data such as their doctors or family members.

Whatever tools you use, it is important to maintain great communication with your loved ones and be supportive of one another. How do you share your medical information? Do you use any of the online programs? Share with the community! Visit our forum and share your experience.
