[00:00:24] Hey, everybody, it's Tom here with episode two hundred sixty five of Screw the Commute podcast. Today, we're gonna talk about booking good podcast guests. And I'm not talking about the mechanics of scheduling and all that stuff. I want to tell you about finding really good guests. And if you're doing interviews, I mean, having great guests is important for growing your listenership. This episode is going to tell you how to find them. I hope you didn't miss episode 264. [00:04:09] All right. Let's get to the main event. Booking great podcast guests. I mean, you may not have considered having guests on your show. I mean, it's a little more difficult technically. And maybe you have enough stuff in your head that you don't need guests, but there's some pretty significant benefits of having guests. See, good guests make your show more interesting and give the listener a chance to hear other viewpoints. You might have debates on certain points and go back and forth with the guest, which makes for great listening. You may even learn a lot from your guests. I mean, I know a guy who started a podcast just because he wanted to learn about the topic. All he did was just keep inviting expert guests on the topic and he got his education and a popular podcast for free. See guests also take some workload off your back because you don't always have to come up with all the content for every show. And many times the guests will even give you questions to ask in which makes your workload even easier. And I'm not saying guests are always great, and in some cases, poor guests can make lots of extra work for you in editing when they have terrible microphones and internet connections. If you concentrate on today's topic of picking really good guests, you should keep your extra workload to a minimum.

[00:06:07] Another thing having good guests can do is grow your show faster, especially if you have nice and ethical guests who promise to promote their episode to their social media and their email list, and they actually do it. Many say they will and then conveniently forget to do it or only half heartedly do it. Also, if you land a really big shot guest who is doing tons of interviews. Chances of them promoting your show aren't great. You just have to take advantage of the fact that you landed a big shot guest and you do the extra promoting through your channels to brag about the fact that you have such a big shot guest on. Now, one thing that's the kiss of death. OK. on radio, TV and podcast is something called Dead Air. That's when nothing is being broadcast. So sure, you can edit this out in a pre-recorded podcast, but I can assure you that if you are a pretty good interviewer and you end up with lots of dead air to edit out, guess what? You didn't have a very good guest. I mean, the best interviews are when there is a vibrant back and forth conversation between the host and the guest. I mean, I'm even OK when guests go off and tell stories that take a couple minutes. It means less work for me. And if if they're a really good guess, they know how to capture and audiences attention. And this episode is going to tell you where to find those people.

[00:07:46] Now, what you have to think about is where people who are glib and really good on interviews congregate. Where do they go? Where are they? Well, I got a resource for you that pretty much guarantees the guests can talk. It's the National Speakers Association. They have several thousand members who speak professionally on all kinds of topics. Now, speaking onstage certainly is not the same as speaking on a podcast. But there is one thing you can be sure of. You won't have dead air, OK? And these people know how to talk and tell a story. And you can find their online directory at nsaspeaker.org and we'll have that in the show notes.

[00:08:37] All right. Who else are good talkers, PR people can talk up a storm. Plus, if they're really good PR people, they have clients that they have coached and those clients are good on interviews or they made their clients get good media training and every interview they land for their clients makes them look better to their clients. So PR people are good. And so you can just Google, let's say, publicists or go to reedsy.com/hire and do some searches where I think that's a directory of PR people.

[00:09:21] Ok. Who else can talk? Well, how about broadcasters and radio show hosts? You absolutely know they can talk. I mean, listen and watch radio and TV stations and invite the show hosts to be guests on your podcast. See, at smaller stations, you'd be surprised how accessible some of the anchors and on air personalities are. They don't really make a lot of money. It's not like they're making 12 million dollars a year. Some of them, it's in the 30 thousands or so. If they're one of the best anchors. So the more publicity they get for themselves. All right. First of all, it feeds their enormous egos and they figure if they are more popular, the networks will notice. You'll be surprised how easy it is to book broadcasters. Now, if you don't mind getting political on your show, local politicians would be really easy to book. Again, many have egos and would be excited that you even ask them.

[00:10:24] Now, if you want to have people chasing you around, giving you tons of great guests. And I put great in air quotes here because the guests may not be that great. They might just have enough money to list themselves at the various podcast booking services that are springing up everywhere. I've interviewed several podcast booking service owners and we'll put those episodes in the show notes. I can't remember what they were. But the better services will coach their clients to be good guests, which only makes sense because if they're a serious service and they keep putting out crappy guests, nobody will use their service. So if you get a good podcast booking service, chances are they're going to coach the guests to be good.

[00:11:15] All right, now, before I tell you about the last couple of ways you can get floods of great guests, let me tell you about my mentor program. It's without a doubt the longest running, most successful, most unique in the field of Internet marketing. And it has a really, truly unique features you can't get anywhere else. I have a big estate home and a TV studio where my students, as part of their year long training, come and actually stay in my house for an immersion weekend. [00:13:25] All right. Let's get back to getting really good podcast guests. Here's a really good one that can really help build your show. You approach other podcast hosts and trade appearances with them. Now, this has to make sense for both of you. For instance, another podcast host might want to be on my show about entrepreneurship, but I may not want to be on their show, let's say, about reading people's auras or something like that. I mean, I don't relate to that topic and have nothing to say about it. I mean, it would be foolish and really bad for my reputation to be on such a show because I don't know anything about the topic. So it wouldn't make sense for me to be a guest. So you can't be so desperate that you either book guests that don't make sense for your show or you don't make sense for their show. Now, it doesn't mean I wouldn't have that podcast host on my show if they were a good guest and they could talk about making a living about spiritual stuff. All right. See, that would be entrepreneurial. Makes sense for my show. That's fine. It just wouldn't make sense for me to be on their show. Now, any trading appearances can be a great way to build your show because you're being exposed to a whole audience of people that never heard of you.

[00:14:44] Ok, the next way to get guest is to listen to other podcasts and hear their guests, that you can immediately determine if their topic is right for you and if they're a good sounding guest. And you also know they do podcasts because you're hearing them on one. And the last way you'll get guest is that as your show grows, people will start calling you, telling you about guests that they heard or would be good for your show and then you can go check them out. And remember those podcasts booking services I mentioned earlier. Once they get hold of you, they'll be pushing their clients to you all the time. But make sure you listen to their other podcasts before you say yes to a guest, because the guests might just be rich enough to hire these agencies and they might not really be that great of a guest.
