Medicare Supplement insurance facts data 2019

Over 14 million Americans now have Medicare Supplement insurance according to a report by the American Association for Medicare Supplement Insurance. (AAMSI).

"The number of Americans who have a Medicare Supplement insurance policy grows each year," states Jesse Slome, director of the Association.   In 2018, some 14.1 million Americans had a Medicare Supplement, also commonly referred to as  Medigap, policy according to AAMSI.

"More Americans than ever find the choices and options provided by Medicare Supplement insurance as their desired choice," Slome explains.  Among the benefits of having a Medigap plan is the ability to go to any doctor or specialist who accepts Medicare.  "That flexibility is extremely desirable especially for those who have residences in multiple locations or who travel internationally.," Slome adds.

According to the Association, some 13.6 million Americans had a Medigap policy in 2017.  Only 9.7 had this coverage in 2010 Slome notes.

The latest Medicare Supplement insurance data including the number enrolled in a Medigap plan as well as many industry statistics can be accessed at https://medicaresupp.org/medicare-supplement-statistics/

The Association's website (www.medicaresupp.org) features the nation's largest online directory of local Medicare insurance agents.  "This is a free service for consumers looking to find knowledgeable, local Medicare agents in their immediate area," Slome notes.  There is no charge to access the Zip Code based directory and no sign-in information is required to find local insurance professionals.

The American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance, the American Association for Medicare Supplement Insurance and the American Association for Critical Illness Insurance all advocate for the importance of planning and support insurance professionals nationwide.  Jesse Slome, founder and executive director of the organizations, is a leading consumer advocate and author of numerous consumer and professional guides focused on retirement and insurance planning that have been published by governmental agencies and private organizations.
