So you?ve written and published a book. Now what? Now you need to promote your book and get it in front of the media. As all successful authors know, forging lasting relationships with the media is one of the keys that could help turn your book into a best seller. You may have struggled in the past trying to get an ?in? with the media, but once you know what they want, you can improve your relationship with them.

January is ?Book Blitz Month,? so now?s the time to work on improving your relationships with the media. But how? According to Master Writing Coach Dawn Josephson, ?You need to know what they want and how to approach them.? Josephson stresses the need to set your book apart from the more than 134,999 others published the same year as yours. ?You do this,? she says, ?by creating promotional pieces that are sure to draw media attention.?

A powerful media kit can help your book stand out, but you want to be sure your promotional efforts aren?t falling on deaf ears. Josephson advises that you do your research first. Know the media outlets that would likely be most responsive to your book, and then target them. Create a list of magazine editors, book reviewers, and radio and television producers who could write about you or your book or feature you or your book on their program, and then send them all a media kit. ?But your work isn?t done once you send the media kit. You need to follow up and make sure that your book and your name stay in front of them. Persistence pays,? says Josephson.

So during ?Book Blitz Month? and throughout the rest of the year, actively work on improving your relationships with the media. Find out what they want and give it to them. In return, you may gain the publicity you need to elevate your book to best seller status.
