"The recent report of an Islamist plot against the Vatican highlights the need Christians have for self-defense firearms," gun rights expert John M. Snyder said here today.

"Islamist fundamentalists throughout the world are waging a genocidal war against Christians," said Snyder.   "Christians must have access to self-defense guns so they can protect themselves and their families against these religious fanatics."

According to ANSA, an Italian news service, "The Vatican was reportedly in the cross-hairs five years ago of a Sardinia-based al-Qaeda Italian network that was busted Friday.

"Wiretaps from an al-Qaeda cell in Sardinia have provided evidence there was briefly at least one suicide bomber in Italy in early 2010 amid possible plans to attack the Vatican.  Italian police launched a massive operation on Friday after uncovering the alleged al-Qaeda network based in the Sardinian capital, Cagliari."

"What this report means is that the Vatican has been a potential Islamist target at least since 2010," Snyder said.  "That comes as no surprise, since Islamists for years have been pursuing an anti-Christian agenda of persecution.

"Christians and Christian leaders would do well to consider the statement of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ that, 'The man without a sword must sell his cloak and buy one,' according to Luke 22:36."

Snyder said, "Pope Francis, in addition to calling upon Our Merciful Lord for spiritual assistance in this trying situation, could initiate a worldwide program through which Catholic churches collect funds for the acquisition and distribution of self-defense guns to Christians facing barbaric Islamist persecution."
