Snyder presented award to McCollum

"Florida Attorney General Bill McCollum established a solid public record in support of the individual Second Amendment civil right of law-abiding American citizens to keep and bear arms while he was a Member of Congress," gun rights expert John M. Snyder stated here today.

"When he was a U.S. Representative," Snyder continued, "McCollum received the 1988 Gun Rights Defender of the Year Award from the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms.

"As ranking member of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime, Rep. McCollum was a leader in the national effort to protect the individual Second Amendment civil right of law-abiding American citizens to keep and bear arms. For instance, Congressman McCollum worked successfully to eliminate from the proposed Brady Bill a provision mandating a national seven-day handgun purchase waiting period."

"On November 10, 1993, on the House floor," Snyder continued, "Rep. McCollum offered an amendment to the Brady Bill which would have preempted all state waiting periods when an instant criminal records check went on line. It was defeated. He then voted against final passage. When the House leadership changed hands after the mid-term elections in 1994, Rep. McCollum became chairman of the subcommittee."

A former National Rifle Association magazine editor, Snyder is the senior rights activist in Washington, according to Shotgun News. He serves on the boards of the National Association of Chiefs of Police and the American Federation of Police & Concerned Citizens, both headquartered in Titusville, Florida.
