Why do leaders fail?

According to Stephen Balzac, consultant and author of "The 36-Hour Course in Organizational Development," there are ten mistakes that leaders make over and over. The good news is that very few leaders make all of these mistakes. The bad news is that this is because the company usually doesn't survive long enough for the leader to make them all.

Two serious errors are creating not a team but a horde of heroes with every man out for himself, and viewing asking for help as a sign of weakness. Competition is great, when you're competing with another business. It's destructive when you're competing with your team mates: internal competition destroys trust.

The advantage of a team is that you have a mix of strengths and weaknesses. When you discourage people from offering or receiving help, you emphasize the weaknesses of the team, not its strengths.
