UIC College of Dentistry Student Ethics Video Wins ADA Grand Prize
Chicago, IL
Tuesday, November 03, 2009

The Council of Ethics, Bylaws, and Judicial Affairs of the American Dental Association (ADA) awarded the Grand Prize to a video entry, Do the Right Thing, produced by University of Illinois at Chicago College of Dentistry Students for the council's 2009 student ethics video contest.

Seven students were involved: Kaitrin Baloue, Kaori Ema (current UIC American Student Dental Association chapter President), Jason Foreman, Shivam Patel (President-Elect), Michael Rabinowitz, Samia Rageb, and Samuel D. Willens (former President). They shared a $1,000 cash prize, and the video was shown at the ADA Annual Session in Hawaii in late September and early October.

"The council undertook this project to provide opportunities for dental students to consider ethical decision making as they prepare to start careers in dentistry," said Dr. William G. Leffler, Chair of the council. "The goal of the contest is to create greater awareness of situations dental students and professionals encounter that could pose ethical dilemmas and provide an entertaining forum for students to consider how those dilemmas should be addressed"

"This is a great honor for our chapter and our school," said Willens, chapter President at the time the video was created. "I am so proud of the growth and accomplishments UIC ASDA has seen during my three years as a leader"

"We thought it would be a fun activity to participate in and it was something we had never done before," Patel said. "On a national level, ASDA was also in the process of drafting a White Paper on Ethics and Professionalism in Dental Education and we thought our video would be a good way to recognize their efforts on a local level.

"The video was a modified public service announcement," Patel continued. "We had a few of our members portray dental school students who were violating particular aspects of the ADA Code of Ethics and Professionalism. The video was set in a student's apartment in which their actions and discussions breached different parts of the Code of Ethics such as confidentiality of patient records, personal relationships with patients, and performing unnecessary services. At the moment they violated the code, our video cut to the television they were watching and a public service announcement played addressing the specific violation.

"Even though we had a lot of fun thinking of different video ideas, writing the script, and taping the video, there was a deeper sense of satisfaction and value to our participation in the video contest," Patel concluded. "Along with all the technical things dental students learn during their education, ethics and professionalism are also very important aspects of the profession. UIC's College of Dentistry has emphasized the importance of these subjects and has made it a priority to incorporate them into our education. As dental students, we were able to apply what we learned and represent our knowledge in a creative manner"
