Hypnosis is a pleasant, voluntary, state of relaxed attentive concentration, an altered state of consciousness, during which the conscious critical mind is relaxed and relatively inactive, and the doorway to the subconscious inner mind is opened with a person's permission. In this comfortable state, suggestibility is heightened, mental absorption is increased, the senses are heightened, and the imagination is activated in a controlled manner. The inner mind is more receptive to acceptable, beneficial suggestions.

Dr. Bruce Eimer is a clinical psychologist in Huntingdon Valley, Pennsylvania who specializes in the use of therapeutic hypnosis. He states that "most methods of therapeutic hypnosis entail the induction of a deeply relaxed state. During this kind of deep relaxation, the hypnotized person is able to utilize all of the healing energy of the mind and body to heal and repair physical and emotional problems. When a person is truly hypnotized, there is no wasted energy focused on stress or distress. Therefore, more mind and body energy is available for healing and change"

Dr. Eimer teaches many of his patients how to hypnotize themselves; that is, he teaches them "self hypnosis". He tells his patients, both in hypnosis and in the waking state, that "when you relax yourself using your self hypnosis, you will be able to reach a deeper level of healing relaxation. This much deeper level of relaxation is called the neutral healing place. It is very difficult to go directly from negative to positive. It is too much of a leap. But it is easy to go from negative to neutral, as you are now, and then feel more positive about what you will be experiencing. This is also a time for healing. All of your energy resources are in balance and available to be used for healing and change. There is no wasted energy on thinking and feeling angry so that energy is free to be used to change how you feel now and in the future"

Dr. Eimer goes on to suggest that "this quiet peaceful time is your daily self-healing time. It is the time that you treat yourself with more care, with more dignity, and with more self-love. It is the time when you allow any feelings of stress or worry or discomfort to melt away as you experience relaxation and comfort, physically and mentally. It is a time for renewal and rejuvenation. It is your special daily retreat into self-care and self-caring. Enjoy it, and use it to take better care of yourself and feel good about yourself"

A new book by Dr. Eimer offers a fresh look at the problem of healing in the face of chronic physical pain using the tool of self hypnosis. The book, entitled "Hypnotize Yourself Out Of Pain Now! A Powerful, User-Friendly Program for Anyone Searching for Immediate Pain Relief" (Crown House Publishing, 2008), focuses on how a person in chronic pain can learn how to be his or her own healer. The book guides the reader in exploring a wide range of self hypnosis techniques for improving his or her ability to cope with and manage chronic pain, with the goal of living more comfortably.

The book also comes with a free self hypnosis audio CD that contains guided imagery and relaxation exercises, therapeutic touch and energy healing techniques, stress control strategies, and a host of other helpful healing materials. Dr. Eimer states, "This CD takes the listener on a pleasant journey into the land of relaxation, enjoyable possibilities, and healing comfort. It teaches you how to enter the hypnotic state on your own. It is a useful self hypnosis technique sampler and a valuable source of information and inspiration"

One simple hypnotic healing technique on the CD and described in Dr. Eimer's book, guides the patient, during trance, to place the palm of a hand on an area of the body closest to some internal health problem, and to apply light pressure to the skin surface. It is suggested that the light pressure will penetrate deeply into the body into the area of illness or disease and direct the immune system to concentrate healing energy to the needy place. Dr. Eimer states that this is often effective in reducing pain and discomfort that is internal and related to some physical trauma or disease. The patient is instructed that this improved feeling while using the hand, while in hypnosis, will also be effective when the patient does this during the waking state. Regular practice during self hypnosis will make it even more powerful when used as needed, during the waking state.

In another book, entitled "Brief Cognitive Hypnosis" (Springer Publishing Company, 2002), co-authored by Dr. Eimer, and Jordan Zarren, M.S.W., who is a Past President of the American Society of Clinical Hypnosis, Zarren and Eimer reviewed the hypnosis literature on approaches to "tweaking" the immune system to help the recovery process from cancer. The authors describe a self hypnosis approach that is designed to become automatic and unconscious, thus, eliminating the necessity of over obsessing about healing. They state that their approach "mobilizes the positive healing energy of the autonomic nervous system that keeps us alive without our having to pay conscious attention to it".
