U.S. FENCING TAPS TIM MOREHOUSE FOR BEIJING GAMES

2008 Fencing Team Named at National Championships in Portland

Portland, OR. April 30, 2008—
Tim Morehouse and thirteen other American athletes were named to the 2008 Olympic Fencing team at the U.S. National Fencing Championships over the weekend in Portland, Oregon. Morehouse, an alternate at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, captured the bronze medal in the Individual National Championships and captained and anchored the Manhattan Fencing Center to a silver medal in the National Team Championships.

Morehouse joins previous Olympians Ariel Zagunis, Sada Jacobson, Seth Kelsey, and Keeth Smart, as well as nine newcomers who form a team that has high hopes for the Beijing games. "We feel like there is unfinished business from Athens," said Morehouse. "We lost twice by one point. Our expectations have never been higher"

The National Championships were the final competition in the Olympic qualifying season. The team was officially announced at a press conference on Saturday.

At the National Championships, Tim Morehouse lost a heartbreaking 15-14 defeat to eventual National Champion Ivan Lee in the semi-finals. But with Morehouse already having secured his place on the team, second place finisher Jason Rogers locked up the third and final spot on the Men's Saber squad. James Williams will serve as an alternate.

Preparations will continue for Morehouse, with just over one hundred days remaining until the opening ceremonies. He'll continue to work himself back into top form after a recent appendix surgery. He's traveling to Bangkok, Thailand this weekend to compete in his first World Cup event since having his operation. Training will continue all the way up to Beijing, with Olympic seeding tournaments taking place over the three months until the games commencement.
