Congress of Racial Equality outraged over CRL use of KKK
New York, NY
Tuesday, February 26, 2008
CORE is outraged at the Center for Responsible Lending (CRL) for its Feb. 22 news release/attack on the Consumer's Rights League. Specifically we are outraged by its comparison to the likes of the KKK anyone who has a different viewpoint than CRL. This attack was precipitated by the Consumer's Rights League February Report: Predatory Charity: The Self-Interested Self-Help of the CRL. "Regardless of the legitimacy of the different views in the financial services debate, we abhor yet another of example of African American's painful history being prostituted for narrow political means," said Niger Innis, National Spokesperson for CORE.
CRL is using the KKK to discredit anyone who might have information to put them in a bad light: the National Credit Union Administration, the IRS, the District of Columbia Superior Court, BusinessWeek, Politico, Bloomberg and the Consumer's Rights League. Each of these entities were sited by Consumer's Rights League to support their report on CRL. This is the same type of argument John Oxendine used in Georgia. By stirring up civil rights imagery and playing the race card CRL has callously injected race into the financial services debate. Innis continues, "In the midst of a possible recession and a mortgage crisis, the issue of financial service options for vulnerable members of our society shouldn't be demagogued. It is too important" Brian McLaughlin
