Infidelity Expert Ruth Houston, the Woman Behind the Valentine’s Day Infidelity Awareness Campaign
If you're wondering why you've been seeing more and more news stories about Valentine's Day and infidelity each year, you have infidelity expert Ruth Houston to thank – or to blame – depending on whether you're the cheater or the one being cheated on.
Every February, New York infidelity expert Ruth Houston, the founder of InfidelityAdvice.com and author of Is He Cheating on You? – 829 Telltale Signs, single-handedly, wages a Valentine's Day Infidelity Awareness Campaign to call attention to an aspect of Valentine's Day that affects millions of people, but seldom gets talked about. It's the link between Valentine's Day, infidelity and extramarital affairs. Peak Season for Infidelity and Extramarital Affairs "Most people consider Valentine's Day to be the most romantic day of the year. Few people realize that this is the time of year when infidelity and extramarital affairs reach their peak" says Houston, who is frequently called on by the media to comment on infidelity issues in the news. "Cheaters everywhere will be getting together on or around Valentine's Day to give or receive Valentine's Day gifts" Houston continues, "This is a very real side of Valentine's Day that affects millions of people everywhere, yet it rarely gets acknowledged, and seldom gets talked about. This aspect of Valentine's Day is often overshadowed by all the traditional Valentine's Day stories on romantic gifts to buy, romantic places to go and romantic things to do. That's why I conduct the Valentine's Day Infidelity Awareness Campaign each year. The campaign is now in it's 5th year. The theme for 2008 is How to Catch a Cheater on Valentine's Day. The Infidelity Awareness Campaign's 3-fold Purpose The Valentine's Day Infidelity Awareness Campaign has a 3-fold purpose, which infidelity expert Ruth Houston describes below: • to heighten public awareness of the connection between infidelity and Valentine's Day • to encourage print, broadcast, and online media outlets to do stories, sidebars, or segments on this seldom-discussed side of Valentine's Day • to alert anyone who suspects their partner of infidelity that Valentine's Day is the best time to get tangible proof of an affair, and advise them on how to catch a cheating mate during the most romantic time of the year. The Ideal Time to Catch a Cheating Mate Houston elaborates on why the three-day period encompassing Valentine's Day, is the best time to catch a cheating mate. Says Houston, "The National Retail Federation predicts that Valentine's Day spending will exceed $17 billion this year. A significant portion of that money will be spent by cheaters buying gifts for their secret lovers. But those gifts could turn out to be the cheater's undoing" "Four activities associated with the purchase and delivery of these Valentine's Day gifts will contribute to the discovery of many extramarital affairs" 1. A cheating man who wants to remain in his lover's good graces and in her bed MUST buy her a Valentine's Day gift. 2. The purchase of that gift will leave a paper trail. 3. In most cases, that gift will be delivered in person -- on or around Valentine's Day. 4. A cheating woman MUST make herself available to receive her secret lover's gift. As part of her Valentine's Day Infidelity Awareness Campaign, Houston advises people who suspect their partners of cheating, how to use this information to their advantage to confirm or get proof of infidelity, or to catch a cheating mate. Tips on How to Catch a Cheating Valentine In keeping with the 2008 theme for the Valentine's Day Infidelity Awareness Campaign, Houston, the author of a popular book on signs of infidelity, provides special tips on what signs to look for in order to catch a cheating spouse or significant other on or around Valentine's Day. An article on Houston's website (www.InfidelityAdvice.com ) entitled, "How to Catch a Cheater on Valentine's Day" contains numerous tips on exposing a cheating Valentine, and offers several strategies that can be used. Houston's blog http://infidelitynewsandviews.blogspot.com) has additional information on specific signs of infidelity to look for on or around Valentine's Day. New tips are posted every few days, and include information on incriminating Valentine's gift receipts, how Valentine's Day flowers can expose cheating mates of both sexes, Valentine's Day signs of a workplace affair and more. Information about signs of infidelity which can be used not just on Valentine's Day, but all year round, can be found in Houston's free infidelity report entitled 21 Ways to Tell if You Have a Cheating Mate. How the Valentine's Day Infidelity Awareness Campaign Got its Start Houston came up with the idea of a Valentine's Day Infidelity Awareness Campaign five years ago. During the course of her ongoing infidelity research, Houston discovered that very little had been written about the link between Valentine's Day and infidelity. A journalist herself, with a background in public relations, Houston, approached hundreds of print, broadcast, and online media outlets with this challenge: "Instead of the usual Valentine's Day coverage on what gifts to buy, places to go and romantic things to do, why not do a story about the side of Valentine's Day that no one talks about?" Says Houston, "I knew that the idea would have widespread appeal because based on statistics, an estimated 50% to 70% of their readers, listeners, or viewers are either victims of infidelity, or know someone who is, and would appreciate having this information" Many media outlets rose to the challenge. Since its inception 5 years ago, Houston's Valentine's Day Infidelity Awareness Campaign has garnered media coverage all across the United States and as far away as South Africa, New Zealand, Bahrain, Turkey, India, France, China, Qatar, Viet Nam, Beirut, Pakistan, Canada, South America, and the United Kingdom. Each year Houston chooses a different theme for the Valentine's Day Infidelity Awareness Campaign. Previous year's themes have included : • Valentine's Day Signs of a Workplace Affair (2007) • Valentine's Day is the Best Time to Catch a Cheating Mate ( 2006) • How Valentine's Day Gifts Can Expose a Cheating Mate (2005) • Is Your Valentine the Cheating Kind? (2004) The 2008 theme is How to Catch a Cheater on Valentine's Day. The Future of the Valentine's Day Infidelity Awareness Campaign It's Houston's hope that the Valentine's Day Infidelity Awareness Campaign will encourage print, broadcast, and online media outlets to present a more balanced view of Valentine's Day. Houston says, " It's gratifying to see so many more stories about various aspects of infidelity and Valentine's Day than there were prior to the start of the campaign 5 years ago. But traditional Valentine's Day stories still outnumber stories about Valentine's Day infidelity by at least 5000 to 1 if not more. I'd love to see every media outlet out there augment their usual coverage of Valentine's Day with at least one feature, sidebar, or segment on Valentine's Day and infidelity. "From a journalistic point of view, it would provide more balanced coverage of this controversial, but seldom-discussed aspect of Valentine's Day. But on a personal level, it would strike fear in the hearts of cheaters everywhere. If more cheaters got caught, more people would be less inclined to cheat on their mates" The Need for Increased Infidelity Awareness "We're in the midst of an infidelity epidemic, says Houston, who has been researching infidelity for almost 15 years. "The numbers continue to increase each year. In one form or another, infidelity affects close to 80% of all marriages and committed relationships today. And it's not just the United States, infidelity is a problem all over the world" Houston now conducts two additional Infidelity Awareness Campaigns each year - the Summer Infidelity Awareness Campaign and the Christmas Infidelity Awareness Campaign. But the Valentine's Day Infidelity Awareness Campaign is the largest, and longest-running of the three. Infidelity Expert Ruth Houston's Mission Houston, who has been happily re-married for almost 8 years now, was once an infidelity victim herself 15 years ago, when she accidentally discovered her now ex-husband's extramarital affairs.
