Blogiitis, A New Disease, To Be Examined in Boston on June 14
Miami Beach, FL
Wednesday, May 23, 2007

Blogitis is a new disease – an addiction to blogs. Thousands of blogs are devoted to gossip. Monitoring them is essential in politics, business, entertainment and other fields.

"Gossip: From the Bible to Blogs" will be discussed by Richard Weiner at the Institute for Public Relations on Thursday, June 14, at 1:00 pm at the Boston Marriott Copley Plaza.

Gossip fuels the stock market, can change an election and make or break a new product. Psychologists, sociologists, anthropologists and philosophers agree that gossip often is beneficial in bonding among friends in the workplace and elsewhere. Because of blogs, gossip now is bigger and more important than ever.

Millions of people all over the world regularly view TMZ, Daily Kos. Politico, Wonkette, Valleywag, Curbed, Matt Drudge, Perez Hilton and other gossip blogs. The web sites of the New York Post's Page Six, People, National Enquirer, Entertainment Tonight and other media compete for scoops.

Rumors about presidential candidates, entertainment celebrities, athletes and other people often start on blogs and are instantly picked up by the mainstream media. Politicians and business people must learn how to cope with rumors and gossip, according to Weiner. The author of 23 books about media and public relations, Weiner is a public relations consultant in Miami Beach.
