Map of Middle Earth by Thierry Jungels
When reading the four-volume Lord of the Rings story, or many history books, it is necessary to have a good map to really understand where events are taking place. J.R.R. Tolkien did readers a great service by providing them with maps which are terrific, but all too often, such as in the paperback versions, the maps are difficult to read, even requiring a powerful magnifying glass to see details.
Well, Thierry Jungels has done a great service to all current and future fans of the Lord of the Rings by creating a colorful and fully detailed map of Middle Earth that is a pleasure to look as well as a fantastic reference tool. Created as a hommage to J.R.R. and Christopher Tolkien, version 7 of the Jungels' maps was finished in August 2004 to commemorate the 50th Anniversary of Lord of the Rings. Jungels not only spent untold months painstakingly recreating all the various aspects of Middle Earth, but translating the place names into a language he did not write or speak. Proving to be a great gift for fans, this map should really be reproduced in the books or offered as a fold out bonus to make it easier for the readers to see where all the action is taking place. In making the movie trilogy, director Peter Jackson was forced to leave out large chunks of the story, change characters or even invent characters to move the story along in a cinematic fashion. Obviously he did a great job, but what really makes the books so great is the rich language and vivid descriptions offered up by Tolkien, and with the Jungels' map in hand the experience of reading these incredible books is truly enhanced.
