Washington, DC – While the Congress is allocating billions of dollars for hurricane Katrina recovery, a better and cheaper alternative may be easily at hand.
In a post-Labor Day telecast on Larry King Live, best-selling author Rick Warren of Purpose-Driven Life fame talked of thousands of victims being helped by churches nationwide. At the same time fellow author Lisa J. Whaley, an African-American woman who is a showcase of overcoming obstacles in life, was promoting the idea of every church, synagogue, mosque and service club in America adopting one family suffering from hurricane Katrina. If done, says Whaley, the needs of all victims could be met quickly and humanely. All that is needed is designation of an agency such as the American Red Cross, The Salvation Army or other institution to coordinate these efforts. "We can solve the problem and solve it immediately," says Whaley. "Church members would get to personally know each suffering family and help them right now -- not one, two months from now!" "In the wake of the devastation, victims may feel as if they are somewhere in the lost and found," says Whaley, former IBM executive and now life coach and author who shares her story of overcoming insurmountable obstacles in Reclaiming My Soul From The Lost And Found. In Reclaiming My Soul From the Lost and Found, (ISBN 1-4140-7230-9 $27.95 251 pages, www.lifeworksynergy.com) Whaley reveals the decisions and actions that not only led her to lose hope and almost give up on life, but how she bounced back and moved forward and found genuine peace and serenity in the wake of life's catastrophes. After enjoying major success in the business world, Whaley watched her marriage slip away, career crumble, health fail, and daughter drift into drug, alcohol and sex abuse. After walking away from suicide, Whaley overcame these obstacles and has since become a champion of people who are struggling with life. "After Katrina victims receive the basic necessities for survival, their journey to recovery is only beginning," concludes Whaley. "They need so much more and our churches and service clubs are in a great position to provide those long-range needs. The people of New Orleans are looking for a hand-up not a hand-out" To arrange an interview with Lisa J.
