(February, 2009) Margaret D'Onofrio and Jeffrey Jones of Human Factor International, and founding members of the Columbia Coaching Alliance, joined the Omega Institute's 25th annual development workshop featuring leading Emotional Intelligence experts Daniel and Tara Goleman at Maho Bay on the north shore of St. John in the U.S. Virgin Islands. The event marks the first small group setting where the Goleman's have engaged the professional coaching community in their EI work.

An excerpt from Daniel Goleman's bio on his website reveals the unexpected reaction to his 1995 New York Times bestseller, Emotional Intelligence (Bantam Books). "To my surprise, there was also great interest in emotional intelligence among the business community. This prompted me to write Working With Emotional Intelligence (published in 1998), and I went back to the research tradition spawned by David McClelland, which by then had become commonplace in most large organizations. This allowed me to survey studies of the competencies that distinguished outstanding performers done independently in a large range of organizations, from PepsiCo to the U.S. Federal Government. This work in turn led to my writing an article in the Harvard Business Review called "What Makes a Leader?" The article became the Review's most-requested reprint to that point, a gauge of the enthusiasm for the concept among those in the organizational world."

Further study and discussion centered on Tara Bennett-Goleman's work in her 2001 New York Times bestseller Emotional Alchemy which, according to her website, "maps the mind and shows how, according to recent advances in cognitive therapy, most of what troubles us falls into basic emotional patterns…" Additionally, "you'll find the very latest research in neuroscience--including the neurological 'magic quarter second,' during which it is possible for a thought to be 'caught' before it turns into an emotional reaction."

HFI Managing Director Jeffrey Jones says of the experience, "it was a privilege to spend a week with two leading experts in the field. I appreciated the lunch hosted by Daniel with our group of coaches. Considering the extent to which his emotional intelligence work is used by organizational coaches, I was surprised to learn that this was the first meeting he had ever had in a small group format to discuss coaching." Jeffrey goes on to say, "it was particularly interesting to hear his feedback on the client work I was doing using the Hay ESCI 360 feedback. My clients tell me that it is one of the best 360 tools they have ever used and gives them deep insight into how to be an effective leader."
