Gail Howard's Number Picks for the Aug. 19 Powerball $245 Million Jackpot
By Gail Howard LAS VEGAS, Aug. 17 -- The odds of winning the Powerball jackpot are 195,249,054 to one, so most players think of Powerball as a dumb luck game. But there are some Smart Luck strategies and systems that can be used to give fate a helping hand. With a $245 million Powerball jackpot for Wednesday, August 19, serious lottery players need some extra luck -- whether it is dumb luck or smart luck to beat the odds of winning any of the nine Powerball prize categories. After the Powerball number field was changed on Jan. 7, 2009, the five white balls are now chosen from numbers 1 to 59; and the red ball is chosen from numbers 1 to 39. Because the five white balls and the single red ball are drawn from two different number fields, we must analyze them as two separate lotto games, each with its own historical data. First, let's track the action of the five white balls over the past 64 drawings since the new number fields were introduced. BEST AND WORST PERFORMING NUMBER GROUPS OF WHITE BALLS: Before we look at individual numbers, it is helpful to get a general overview of what to expect in the next drawing by examining specific group activity. The Ten Game Group Count is a Short Term Bias Tracker. When we divide the 59 Powerball white balls into 12 groups of five numbers each, the best performing group was 46 to 50, accounting for 16 percent of all the winning numbers drawn over the past ten games. Second best performing groups were numbers 1 to 5 and 31 to 35, each of which accounted for 14 percent of the wins. The poorest performing number groups were numbers 6 to 10, 11 to 15, 16 to 20 and 56 to 59, each of which accounted for only 4 percent of the winning numbers. The Hit Charts show at a glance the hottest to the coldest Powerball numbers. Although number 42 was the hottest number with 11 hits in the first 54 games, it has since cooled off without a hit for the past ten games. (However, numbers 42 and 23 are the numbers most out for their average.) Numbers 26 and 32 are the second hottest Powerball numbers, with 10 hits each, and they are still hot. Number 26 might be a good play for two hits in a row, and according to the Multiple Hit Pattern Chart, number 14 would also be a choice for a repeat hit. Numbers currently out the longest are: 55 which is out 47 drawings; 29 is out 43 drawings; 54 is out 39 drawings - in case you want to include a long-shot number. Number 25 holds the record of the longest losing streak when it lost 54 drawings in a row. But 25 ended its 54-game losing streak on Aug. 9, then skipped one game, hit again, and then skipped one. I predict that 25 will hit at least three more times within a fairly rapid succession. I would play number 25 every game for the next six drawings. Number 11 hit once after losing 47 games and then bombed out with a 16-game loss. I would not play number 11 until after it hits once, then stay on it for four drawings in case it makes a Trend Reversal. Number 17 hit once after losing 42 games and then lost six more. That makes 17 a dead dud. Very often, lotto numbers bounce off Double Bottoms. These numbers are good to play only for one or two drawings. If they don't hit within a couple of drawings, they sink into oblivion and can be ignored until they hit again. 01 is out 10 games and is especially nice because of a fairly consistent pattern. 16 is out 7 games and is an excellent choice for this drawing. 19 is out 11 games. 28 is out 8 games. These white balls have reversed a downtrend and are ready for action: 33 confirmed a Trend Reversal after skipping 32 games; now out two games. 34 bounced off a Double Bottom of 20 games, then confirmed a trend reversal with two hits within three games; now out one game. Other interesting white balls to consider: 04 is on a hot streak. If 36 hits this drawing, it will become a hot number, making up for two losing streaks of 32 and 30 games. SUM CHART BIAS TRACKER: Now, let's look at Powerball from a different perspective with the Sum Chart Bias Tracker. When you add the Powerball 5-ball winning numbers together, you get a sum. The lowest possible sum is 15. (1+2+3+4+5 = 15) The highest possible sum is 285. (55+56+57+58+59 = 285) Although sums as low as 15 and as high as 285 are theoretically possible, the lowest sum of the five Powerball winning numbers drawn since this game began is 60. The highest sum ever was 236. Consider this fact: Seventy (70) percent of the sums of all winning Powerball 5-ball combinations fall within the sum range of 111 to 189. TRACKING THE POWERBALL RED BALL: The all important red ball makes the difference between winning $200,000 or winning $245 million! (As well as winning other prize categories.) Since the new number field changed on Jan. 7, number 37 was the hottest red ball with six hits. Red ball 37 is still hot, having had two hits in the last ten games. Number 21 was second hottest with five hits and number 09 had four. The following Powerball red balls have not had a single hit in the 64 drawings of this game: 03-22- 28-31-32-35.
