New York, NY
Tuesday, October 06, 2009

According to New York infidelity expert Ruth Houston, David Letterman broke at least two of the unspoken rules that govern office or workplace romance, by having sex with female members of his staff.

Houston, who is frequently called on by the media to comment on infidelity high profile infidelity and popular issues in the news, has actually documented the Rules of Engagement for Workplace Romance and Office Affairs.

"Workmates who are romantically or sexually involved, need to keep things on a professional level if they want to avoid the problems workplace romances can cause." says Houston, "By becoming sexually involved with Stephanie Birkitt, Holly Hester, and other female members of his staff, David Letterman broke two of the cardinal rules governing workplace romance."

The Rules David Letterman Broke

Commenting on Letterman's sexual escapades, Houston, the founder of InfidelityAdvice.com and author of Is He Cheating on You - 829 Telltale Signs, says Letterman broke the following rules:

Rule #1 - Never become romantically or sexually)involved with a person in your direct chain of command. (In other words – no boss – subordinate relationships)

Rule #2 - Never get involved in a workplace romance if either one of you  is married or in a committed relationship.

Houston adds, "If reports of Letterman having a love nest above his studio are true, then he broke a third cardinal rule, as well.

Rule # 3 - Never engage in sex on company property.

Says Houston, "Letterman could have saved himself a lot embarrassment, and avoided the alleged extortion attempt by Robert Halderman, if he'd followed the rules of engagement for workplace romance and office affairs."

The complete list of rules appears below.

Ruth Houston's Rules of Engagement for Office Affairs and Workplace Romance

Infidelity expert Ruth Houston advises anyone who wants to keep their office romance on a professional level to follow the guidelines below. Adhering to these rules will minimize many of the problems a workplace romance can cause.

•    Never get involved with someone in your direct chain of command.

•    Never get involved in an office affair if either of you are married or in a committed relationship .

•    Confine your romantic attachments to someone who is a peer, rather than someone above or below you in rank.

•    Know your company's policy regarding office romance.

•    Never underestimate the power of the office grapevine. Try to keep your office romance a secret, if you can.

•    Keep it low key – don't flaunt the fact that the two of you are romantically involved.

•    Avoid public displays of affection – it's highly unprofessional.

•    Don't gossip about your love life.

•    Do not exchange embarrassing or ostentatious flowers, cards or gifts. (Small, discreet, tasteful gifts are okay.)

•    Do not allow your office romance to interfere with productivity – yours, your partner's or your coworkers.

•    Do not use company e-mail to send passionate or suggestive love notes to each other.

•    Do not leave X-rated voice mails on each other's phones.

•    Don't show or request favoritism regarding work assignments, raises, promotions or company perks.

•    Do not use company funds to entertain your partner.

•    Refrain from overt sexual behavior on the job.

•    Never engage in sex on company property. (That includes stair wells, supply closets and company parking lots.)

•    Have a back-up career plan in case things take a negative turn. Be prepared to find another job.

Houston adds, "In view of the extortion attempt against Letterman, we should probably add one more rule to that list. Never document your office affair or workplace romance in a diary where a nosy roommate or boyfriend can find it and attempt to blackmail your boss."
