It is something that all parents can relate to, the fear of leaving their child with a caregiver. How can you protect your child when you can't always be present? Parents rely on babysitters, grandparents, teachers, nannies or other caregivers to watch their children while they tend to other responsibilities. Unfortunately, not all caregivers are suitable or sufficiently educated about the dangers that children face and how to adequately react in an emergency situation. Fortunately, two companies based on opposite coasts of the U,S, have joined forces to open the lines of communication between parents and caregivers and educate them on child safety.

"Shockingly, the number one cause of child death in the United States is not childhood cancer, diabetes or influenza. In fact, if you add all childhood illnesses together, you still would not equal the number of children who die of preventable injuries" explains Britt Michaelian, mother of three and CEO of Responsible Family Company. "This statistic is the reason that parents and caregivers must be ready to handle any situation that might confront them"

In addition to preparing caregivers for emergencies, communication between parents and caregivers is essential to bridge the gap between assumptions and reality. Jill Starishevsky, a prosecutor of child abuse and sex crimes in New York City and founder of HowsMyNanny.com said, "Parents must have continuous feedback to be certain that their children are being adequately cared for by their caregivers. It is with this in mind that HowsMyNanny.com was created"

Established in October 2006, HowsMyNanny.com provides a mini license plate to attach to a child's stroller so that a passerby who observes the nanny's conduct (good or bad) can send an email to the parent's personal account. In addition to being the first organization to facilitate communication between parent and caregiver through the use of a license plate affixed to the child's stroller, HowsMyNanny.com is educating parents on how to effectively screen and interview nannies.

Responsible Family Company, a San Francisco based business founded in 2007 is reaching families through DVDs, safety courses and other media designed to empower and educate caregivers about the best practices in keeping children safe. Developed with an emergency room physician, Care for Kids: The Essential Guide to Preparing Caregivers is an award winning DVD covering the most common medical emergencies and how to handle them. This program is currently available on Amazon.com for $19.99.

When the founders of these companies learned about each other, they realized the natural synergy between their businesses and the possibilities that come with working together in a holistic approach to educate caregivers about safety. Both HowsMyNanny.com and Responsible Family have been created with the express purpose of empowering parents and caregivers with safety, communication and positive caregiver techniques. Both organizations also have a similar message: it is imperative to be proactive when it comes to the safety of our children.

This weekend, HowsMyNanny.com and Responsible Family will be sponsoring Baby Celebration LA, at the Los Angeles Convention Center. Jill Starishevsky has organized The Safety Panel at this event, which is comprised of leading experts in the varied fields of childhood safety. They are highly experienced and well informed professionals who have spent many years assisting parents with valuable techniques such as nanny selection, Safe Smarts, car seat installation, school bus safety, school lunch safety and so much more.

In addition to providing tips on how to effectively interview a nanny, Ms. Starishevsky will be reading the children's book she wrote called "My Body". The book is designed to teach children about the difference between "good touch" and "bad touch" and provide parents with a valuable tool to discuss child sexual abuse prevention. Though the book is not due out until June, interested parents can provide their addresses and sign up on a waiting list by going to MyBody@HowsMyNanny.com. Continuing the synergistic relationship, Ms. Michaelian will be emceeing the safety panel on Saturday while donating educational DVDs and Responsible Family child safety magnets.

Both of these child advocates look forward to sharing their knowledge and expertise directly with mothers and caregivers in the Los Angeles area and this is just the beginning. In the second half of April, Britt is sponsoring the Week of the Young Child in San Francisco and in May, she will be leading two workshops on emergency preparedness for nannies at the International Nanny Association conference in Orlando. These two companies are working together to reach a larger market with their message. Michaelian says, "We are always looking for ways to partner up and work together to educate parents and caregivers about the importance of safety from coast to coast. If we can make a positive difference in the field of family safety, this is well worth the time. Just as with motherhood, our job will never be done!"
