CDC says pets CAN contract swine flu. Here's how to protect your pet.

(Nov. 12, 2009) ATLANTA, Ga. – During the month of October 2009, the Center's for Disease Control reported that pets, whether in a leash or running free, can contract swine flu from human and animal carriers. Additionally, the CDC and other sources give ways to keep your pet from becoming infected with H1N1.

"We've known certainly it's possible this [animals with H1N1] could happen," said Centers for Disease Control and Prevention spokesman Tom Skinner in an Associated Press article.

H1N1 can be prevented in your pet by following a few easy steps. First, having proper hygiene in your family and your household pets is always an excellent way to prevent any spread of germs. Washing your hands constantly, keeping your pet's dog bowls clean and keeping your dog from roaming the neighborhood.

Second, limit your dog's exposure to other animals during this time. Dog's come in contact with germs on a daily basis. Even playing with another dog's toys or drinking from the same dog fountain as other dogs can spread countless germs. Avoiding dog parks and keeping your dog's leash short during walks will keep your pets from licking things they shouldn't, and will keep dogs from picking up things with their mouth that they shouldn't.

Third, keep a close eye on your pet's overall health. If your dog is acting abnormal, loss of appetite or lethargic behavior. It might be a good idea to keep regular visits to the vet, so you can catch anything before hand.

The number of reported H1N1 cases in animals has been very small. However, being concerned and responsible with your pet's hygiene is important for you and your entire family, and will keep these reported numbers from growing.
