. " Why You Really Have Bunions" Patients ask me all the time " Doc, is the reason I got bunions because I wore the wrong shoes". The answer is not really. Wearing the wrong shoes can make your feet get a lot worst but it is not the real cause of getting bunions and most other foot problems. The real reason is picking the wrong parents. You see, most foot problems are inherited A simple bunion is an abnormal bump on the first metatarsal bone. The bunion can either be on the top or side of the first metatarsal bone. In a more advanced bunion deformity, called Hallux Abducto Valgus, there starts to be a movement of the big toe toward the second toe. The most severe bunion is when the first toe not only moves toward the second toe, but it overlaps or underlaps the second toe. At one time or another in their lives, most women will wear some type of shoes that are wrong for them. But only some of them will develop bunions. This is because it is not the shoe causing the bunion but the foot you were born with. The reason you get the bunion to start with is because you have to much motion in the 1st metatarsal bone, this you inherited . This causes you to have something called hypermobility of the first metatarsal bone. If you have hypermobility, it will force the first metatarsal head (bunion bone) to move abnormally. This hypermobility or excess motion of the first metatarsal bone is the ultimate reason for bunions. The good news is that a simple $2.00 pad can stop this abnormal movement, and save you from having foot surgery in many cases. Hypermobilty is a type of Morton's Toe .
