"According to statistics from the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, more alcohol-related vehicle crashes, injuries and fatalities occur during the Fourth of July time period than during any other time during the year. Families need to make sure that not only are they not drinking and driving, but they need to be extra vigilant about other drivers on the road who may have consumed alcohol" asserts family safety expert Britt Michaelian, M.A. of Responsible Family Company http://ResponsibleFamily.com based in San Francisco.
"The U.S. Fire Administration states that in 2004, approximately 9,600 children under the age of 15 suffered from burn injuries as a result of Independence Day fireworks. Sparklers and firecrackers are the most common contributors to burns and pose serious dangers to children. Parents should be advised, it is not safe for children under age 15 to handle fireworks. Children can appreciate local fireworks displays and even fireworks programs broadcast on television while in a safe environment" • Observe local and state laws with regard to fireworks and use common sense. • Purchase fireworks from authorized fireworks distributors. • Follow all instructions and safety information for fireworks. • Never point fireworks in the direction of a person, home or vehicle. • Children under the age of 15 should not be allowed to play with or light fireworks. • Do not use homemade fireworks. • Keep a safe distance (at least 20 feet or more) from people who are lighting fireworks. • If a person catches on fire, calmly remind him or her to Stop, Drop and Roll until the flames are out. • Sparklers should be used with caution, in open areas and only by adults. • If using a barbeque, keep the lid closed and keep children at least 5 feet away. Have an adult monitor the barbeque at all times while it is hot. • If lighting a campfire, keep the flame small. • Make sure to have plenty of water and a shovel on hand in case a campfire gets out of control. • Check to make sure all campfires, barbeques and fire pits are fully extinguished before leaving the premises. • An adult should be on duty at all times to supervise children in swimming pools, beaches or other bodies of water. • All Children under age 7 must wear US Life Guard approved life jackets when riding in boats, regardless of swimming ability. • Between the hours of 10am and 2pm, children and adults need to apply plenty of sunscreen every hour when perspiring excessively or swimming for long periods of time. • Stay hydrated. In hot weather, adults and children should drink plenty of fluids on a regular basis. • Do not drink alcohol and drive. Have a designated driver or walk instead. • Do not leave children or pets in cars, especially in hot weather! • Keep pets indoors or in the shade in hot weather and provide plenty of water. • Enjoy the holiday and keep the peace.
