Attract the Right Job or Clientele: Why Sales Needs To Be Reinvented
Introduction
People serious about their sales career are also serious about elevating the status of their profession. Paull Watts, the host of Sales Reinvented Podcast, is the perfect example of someone working to raise the bar.
Paul’s Story
Many professional sales trainers the world over will tell you that one of the ‘ice-breakers’ they use in their sales classes is to write the word ‘Sales’ on the whiteboard. They then ask the class to write down the first three words that spring to mind. It probably won’t surprise you that more than 50% of the responses that they get back are negative. And this is from people who have chosen the career.
Problem
I was tired of listening to people bashing my chosen career and furthermore influencing others to steer clear of this profession. I feel privileged to have found sales as a career. My intent is to do everything in my power to change the stigma attached to this exciting and rewarding profession.
Why Start Another Sales Podcast?
Before I began my company, I was fortunate enough to read an outstanding book called ‘Start With Why’ by Simon Sinek. Reading the book, I found the secret to helping ensure that I was always on target and not deviating from my path.
Knowing Your Why
Understanding the why and writing it down in a concise and easy to grasp way, you will always be able to refer to it when you are making business decisions. There are lots of shiny objects thrown at us, and these can make for easy distractions, Squirrel, Squirrel, Shiny Object….
Our mission is to change the negative perception of sales people with a vision of making selling a profession of which to be proud. My why became the Sales Reinvented podcast.
Challenges of Starting a Podcast
The difficulties I thought we were going to face were very different from the challenges we faced. We thought that convincing sales experts from around the globe to come on the show was going to be difficult. Our mission proved to be so strong and resonated so much with our guests, that they were keen to be part of the show and become part of our sales reinvented community.
Here is an example of one of the episodes from James Muir. He shares the Power of Selling with Genuine Intent. If more sales people sold with the genuine intention of helping their customers, the general public’s perception of salespeople would improve dramatically. There are many challenges to overcome when building a podcast. Most are technical around sound quality, especially when your interviews are conducted over Skype or online. One of the greatest challenges we faced was taking the interviews and condensing them into 18-22 minute episodes. Editing is difficult, especially when all of the content is quality content.
Fortunately, we surrounded ourselves with some very talented people during the start-up phase. Peter Clarke, from Rebel Soul Media, is the executive producer of the show. He is the magician who is responsible for the high quality produced episodes you hear each week. The lesson that I learned here was that if you surround yourself with people who believe what you believe great things can happen. I am very lucky to be surrounded by a team of professionals who are all dedicated to making the show a success.
Future Vision
Our goal is to provide our listeners with valuable content. It has a positive effect on their sales careers and inspires their self- improvement. Our long-term vision for the Sales Reinvented podcast is to build a global community of engaged, authentic, high performing sales professionals who choose to add excellent value for their clients and ultimately make selling a profession of which may all be proud.
