The Caring Generation®  - When Elderly Parents Refuse Help

Golden CO- Caregiving expert Pamela D. Wilson hosts The Caring Generation radio program for caregivers and aging adults this coming Wednesday, January 22 on the Bold Brave Media Global Network. The program airs live at 9 p.m. EST. The Caring Generation® aired initially from 2009 to 2011 on 630 KHOW-AM in Denver, Colorado.

The caregiving topic for this week's program is What to Do When Elderly Parents Refuse Help. Elderly parents may be apathetic and unmotivated to be proactive about daily living needs and health. Apathy and a lack of motivation may result from a medical diagnosis like dementia, Alzheimer's, stroke, Parkinson's, or Huntington's disease, schizophrenia, or mental illness.

In other situations, medications can cause apathy. Drugs to treat depression can have the opposite effect resulting in an inability to initiate activities, poor persistence, a lack of interest, and dulled emotions. Ruling out a medical cause is essential so that caregivers can understand that an elderly parent is not purposefully negative or uncooperative.

Guest Katherine Hackett from the Cognitive Neuropsychology Lab at Temple University will share research about keeping the mind sharp at any age. Katherine will also share information about clinical studies at Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. A clinical study or a clinical trial is a program that allows consumers to volunteer to test treatments or interventions to prevent, detect, treat, or manage a disease or a medical condition.

Clinical studies at the Temple Cognitive Neuropsychology lab relate to everyday function and keeping the brain sharp, memory loss, traumatic brain injury, aphasia, heart conditions and more. More information about current clinical trials and how to participate is on the Temple Cognitive Neuropsychology website,

Fears of elderly parents result in the response of refusing help. The changes associated with aging include concerns about losing control, experiencing worsening health, not being seen as capable, and worry about money to pay for care.

Adult children can navigate these sticky subjects by being empathetic with elderly parents and building trust. Pamela shares conversation tips for caregivers during this program. Also essential for success in caring for elderly parents is to examine caregiver intentions when trying to motivate or change the behavior of elderly parents.

At the stage of life, when elderly parents seek comfort, adult children must communicate with patience and understanding — asking "why" can help caregivers understand motivations. For example, does the caregiver want an elderly parent to move closer because of convenience or real necessity? Is the caregiver taking an all or nothing attitude toward the refusals of elderly parents to accept care?

How important is winning the battle versus being empathetic and looking at the situation from the viewpoint of an elderly parent? The January 20th edition of The Caring Generation talks about the power struggles that can occur when elderly parents dig in their heels and refuse to cooperate with adult children who are their caregivers.
