The Caring Generation® Trapped Caring for Elderly Parents or a Spouse

Golden CO- Caregiving expert Pamela D. Wilson hosts The Caring Generation® podcast show for caregivers and aging adults. This coming Wednesday, March 17, 2021, the topic is Trapped Caring for Elderly Parents or a Spouse.

Wilson releases a new podcast in The Caring Generation series every Wednesday, sharing tips and conversations about aging, caregiving, and family relationships to help caregiving families plan for what's ahead. The podcasts are available on Wilson's website and all major podcast sites.

Trapped Caring for Elderly Parents or a Spouse

During this podcast, Wilson addresses the challenging topic of caregivers admitting that they feel burdened or exhausted by caregiving responsibilities. What caregivers may not realize is that an elderly parent or spouse receiving care may feel equally trapped by health and physical concerns.

Tips to help caregivers and care recipients take back their lives are shared during this program. Learning how to have uncomfortable discussions about caregiving relationships can lead to progress to relieve feelings of burden. Many care receivers become dependent on family caregivers to the point that they give up responsibility for managing their health and daily needs. As this dependency grows, caregivers can feel more trapped in care relationships.

While many adult children gladly accept the role and responsibility of caregivers, many admit the responsibilities grow to the point of being unsustainable. The effects on career, income, health, and family relationships become unbalanced and difficult to manage emotionally. Taking life back may include discussions about alternate care situations for elderly parents or a spouse. Wilson tackles these topics during this program.

Guest Dr. Anthony Caterine of the Riverside Health System

Wilson interviews Dr. Anthony Caterine of the Riverside Health System in Newport News, Virginia. He discusses the benefits of telepsychiatry for patients in hospitals and nursing homes.  Dr. Caterine is Board-certified in Geriatric Psychiatry and Neurology and specializes in treating dual diagnosis patients with acute physical and psychiatric problems. His work in the Riverside Health system most recently has focused on providing telemedicine consultations to patients.

Caterine's education includes a Bachelor of Science Degree from the University of Notre Dame, a Medical Doctor Degree from Loyola University Stritch School of Medicine, and Residency in Psychiatry from the University of Florida and Shand's Teaching Hospital in Gainesville. Dr. Caterine has received numerous honors and awards and regularly presents on subjects related to psychiatry and medicine.
