The Caring Generation® Radio – The Importance of Patient Education

Golden CO- Caregiving expert, Pamela D. Wilson hosts The Caring Generation radio program for caregivers and aging adults this coming Wednesday, November 13, on the Bold Brave Media Global Network. The program airs live at 9 p.m. EST. The Caring Generation® originally aired from 2009 to 2011 on 630 KHOW-AM in Denver, Colorado.

The caregiving topic for this week's program is The Importance of Patient Education and Engagement Individuals with health issues don't consider themselves to be patients even though this is how the healthcare system defines an individual who needs medical care and treatment. A similar situation exists for persons helping elderly parents or spouses who do not consider themselves as caregivers.

Health and well-being are aspects of life that have far-reaching effects on quality of life. Individuals go through life and the concept of being a patient or being a caregiver is not relevant until an unexpected event results in unnecessary stress and suffering. Patient education, caregiver education, and engagement are essential when we think of the long-term aspects of health and well-being and the effects on daily life.

Special guest, Dr. Mayer Davidson, Professor of Medicine at Charles Drew University, the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and past President of the American Diabetes Association joins The Caring Generation this week to talk about Diabetes Prevention and Management Dr. Davidson founded the Venice Family Clinic in 1970 that became the largest free medical clinic in the United States. He continues to serve as a member of the Board of Directors, Chairman of the Medical Practice Committee and he volunteers supervising a Diabetes Program and seeing patients once a week.

Disease prevention and management are important to reduce healthcare costs. Patients and caregivers make important decisions about well-being and health. These decisions might involve deciding about health insurance, scheduling a routine health exam, taking medications, or scheduling a medical treatment. Depending on how complicated the task, a struggle might occur with completing the task, delaying the task, or not doing the task at all.

Complicating factors that affect patient and caregiver health engagement, education, and literacy are that health when good is not important enough to grasp time and attention. Until the heart attack, the hip fracture, or a life-affecting diagnosis happens to us or a loved one, paying attention to health and well-being may not be important. Being a caregiver is not relevant until one becomes a caregiver.

Healthcare costs skyrocket with the diagnosis of chronic disease, prescription medications, medical tests, and more frequent medical care. It is for this reason that patient and caregiver education and engagement are so important.

Until patients and consumers choose to become more proactive and educated, health worries will continue to grow. Health issues will surface, and healthcare costs will rise. Hospitals, doctors, and the medical system do not hold all of the solutions. A proactive, educated, and engaged patient has more control over health, well-being, and healthcare costs than they realize.
