The 29th Annual Hispanic Heritage Awards honored Latino celebrities and their accomplishments across a variety of genres, including music, literature, business and government and recognized the contributions and accomplishments of Latino leaders while celebrating cultural pride and the great promise to America.
The event was filmed at the historic Warner Theater in Washington, DC and was hosted by cast members from Orange is the New Black stars Elizabeth Rodriguez and Berto Colon.
The night was a huge success filled with performances from Grammy-Winning Singer J Balvin; Icon Angelica Maria; Billboard's "one of the top new artists to look out for" Jason Cerda; Placido Domingo Awardee Opera Singer Ailyn Pérez; Grammy Winning La Santa Cecilia; Singer Nicholas Rodriguez; and the Fania All-Stars and Nicholas Rodriguez sang a powerful rendition of "Hallelujah" during a moving tribute to the victims of Orlando's Pulse nightclub massacre.
During the broadcast, Tony Jimenez, President & Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of MicroTech was presented the Hispanic Heritage Award for Technology by Singer/Actor, JW Cortes and award-winning filmmaker, producer and entrepreneur, Moctesuma Esparza. Other 2016 honorees included The Honorable Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor - Leadership Award, Actress/Singer Angelica Maria - Legend Award, Author Junot Díaz - Literature Award, Businessman George Herrera - Business Award, Singer J Balvin - Vision Award, motivational speaker Massy Arias - Wellness Award, educator Dr. Diana Natalicio - STEM Award, Latin music superstar Prince Royce - Inspira Award and Salsa legends Fania All-Stars - Arts Award.
Award Presenters included Singer/Actor Prince Royce; Singer/Actress Becky G; Actress/Singer Angélica Vale and daughter Angélica Masiel; Actor Nicholas Gonzalez; Actor Raul Castillo; Singer Frankie Negron; Secretary Julian Castro; Actress Alex Meneses; Activist/Author Julissa Arce; SBA Administrator Maria Contreras-Sweet; Filmmaker Carmen Marron; Singer/Actor Nicholas Rodriguez; Singer Ailyn Pérez; Singer Jason Cerda; Tony Marrero; New York Judge, the Honorable Jenny Rivera; Actor Arturo Castro Singer Actor, JW Cortes and award-winning filmmaker, producer and entrepreneur, Moctesuma Esparza.
The audience of more than 2,000 people included members of Congress, White House officials, ambassadors, business and community leaders, celebrities and entertainers. The evening was co-hosted by more than 40 top national Latino organizations.
The 29th Annual Hispanic Heritage Awards will be broadcast nationally on PBS on Friday, September 30, 2016 at 10:00 p.m. EST as part of the Hispanic Heritage Month celebration.
Created by the White House in 1987 to commemorate the establishment of Hispanic Heritage Month, the Hispanic Heritage Awards are considered one of the highest honors for Hispanics in the United States. Past honorees have included Rita Moreno, Anthony Quinn, Antonio Banderas, Placido Domingo, Celia Cruz, Tito Puente, Carlos Gutierrez, Juan Marichal, Los Tigres Del Norte, Jose Feliciano, Isabel Allende, Alejandro Sanz, Oscar De La Hoya, Gloria Estefan, Martin Sheen, Andy Garcia and Juan Luis Guerra, among many others.
