INDIANAPOLIS – The Society of Professional Journalists  has hired experienced leadership and organizational development consultant Karyn Nishimura Sneath as its new Director of Education.

For 24 years, Sneath has owned a consulting practice focused on leadership and organizational development for associations and nonprofits. Prior to her consulting work she led the education departments for two associations in Indianapolis.

“I have known Karyn for 20 years as a colleague, and in her we are getting a thought-leader in the association world and a tremendously creative educator,” said SPJ Executive Director John Shertzer. “I have seen Karyn build programs for students, for professionals, for both young and established leaders. Her ability to reach and inspire such a diverse range of learners is remarkable. SPJ and the broader journalism community is lucky to have her.”

Sneath will begin her duties for SPJ on Aug. 10.

She is actively involved in the American Society of Association Executives as a Fellow and has been a member of the Key Consultants and Professional Development committees.

“I’m looking forward to working alongside the SPJ staff and volunteers to advance the profession and stature of journalism,” Sneath said.  “With today’s focus on journalists, we have an opportunity to promote the Society’s benefits, its strong code of ethics, and the work we are doing to build the skills and competence of our members and leaders. Together I know we will make SPJ even more relevant and indispensable to its current and future members through timely and impactful leadership and chapter development initiatives.”

Personally, Sneath is a volunteer board member for The Shift Initiative and recently finished a four-year term as board member for the Sigma Kappa Foundation as governance chair.

She has been married to her Kansas Jayhawk husband, Steve, since 1992. They met while working at Wichita State University and playing together on a recreation league softball team. They have a teenage daughter Skyler.

SPJ promotes the free flow of information vital to informing citizens; works to inspire and educate the next generation of journalists; and fights to protect First Amendment guarantees of freedom of speech and press. Support excellent journalism and fight for your right to know. Become a member, give to the Legal Defense Fund or give to the SPJ Foundation.
