INDIANAPOLIS – The nation’s premier visual journalism organizations are adding their own unique categories to The CCC Awards, which recognize college journalism excellence in the coverage of COVID-19.
The Society for News Design and the National Press Photographers Association are joining forces with the Society of Professional Journalists and the Associated Collegiate Press – marking the first time all four organizations have partnered on a single project.
SND will judge a design category in this free weekly contest, while NPPA will judge a photo category. Winners of each receive a one-year membership to either organization.
"The NPPA is excited to be a part of a program that will engage young visual journalists in the challenge of documenting what may become a historical life-changing event of our nation and the world," NPPA Executive Director Akili-Casundria Ramsess said.
Added SND Executive Director Tiffany Shackleford, “Visual journalism is an essential skill for media students, no matter what outlet. SND is always thrilled to encourage the next generation of visual storytelling – and see what amazing creativity and skill these students have.”
SPJ and ACP launched The CCC Awards a week ago, and in its first five days, they received 258 entries from 125 student media outlets in the United States, Canada, France and Egypt.
"What an incredible response, not just around the country but around the world,” SPJ Awards Committee Chair Sue Kopen Katcef said. “To a person, they produced outstanding work under the most difficult of circumstances. Many, if not most, had to cope with extremely challenging situations. But these young journalists persisted – putting in long hours, with few resources and, of course, no pay.”
