State Honors Tenth Anniversary with Services, Concerts, and a Heroes Run

Annapolis, MD, September 7, 2011 –

As new 9/11 Memorials are unveiled across the Country, we are reminded that the effects of that tragic day ten years ago were felt, and continue to be felt, in every corner of our Nation. They stand to honor the victims and heroes lost and as symbols of the courage, compassion and resilience of Americans. They also serve as stark reminders that freedom requires constant vigilance on the part of every individual. Adding to the many memorials in Maryland are two new ones.

Maryland, home to 63 victims, celebrates the Tenth Anniversary of September 11, 2001, with the unveiling of a memorial on the plaza of the World Trade Center at Baltimore's Inner Harbor at 3:00 pm on September 11. The centerpiece incorporates mangled 22' steel beams from the New York World Trade Center's North Tower, blocks of stone from the Pentagon, and artifacts from the field in Shanksville, PA. The base will be inscribed with the names and birthdates of Marylanders who died in the attacks, and markers to show the time that each plane crashed and when each tower collapsed. See: http://www.maryland911memorial.org/ for more information.

The greater Annapolis area will dedicate Phase Two of a 9/11 Memorial at 8:30 am on September 11, in front of the Anne Arundel County Fire and Police headquarters in Millersville, MD. An American flag, flanked by towering steel beams salvaged from the rubble of the Twin Towers, a slab of limestone from the Pentagon, bronze plaques telling the story of 9/11, inscribed bricks, benches, and other fixtures, will remind the community that 343 firefighters and 60 police officers were among those who lost their lives responding to the terrorist attacks on the Twin Towers 10 years ago. Commemorative services and concerts are taking place throughout the State, and Annapolis joins communities around the Country in the Second Annual 9/11 Heroes Run at the Navy Marine Corps Memorial Stadium to honor the fallen by challenging the living. See: http://911heroesrun.com/

Event organizers may show the 9/11 Memorial video "Angels Over America," which can be viewed at www.AngelsOverAmerica.org. Maryland poet Carolyn Long co-produced the 9/11 Memorial video from her poem of the same name with award-winning New York arranger and producer Mark Freeh, against the backdrop of powerful 9/11 images and his stirring arrangement of "America the Beautiful" and moving renditions of "Amazing Grace" and "My Country 'Tis of Thee."

The 8-minute video incorporating original photographs and video from September 11 is both a stirring tribute to 9/11 victims and heroes and an artistic work whose unique metaphor offers healing perspectives on this pivotal moment in our nation's history. (www.AngelsOverAmerica.org)

Copies of the "Angels Over America," video on DVD and laminated posters of the poem (which can be read on the website) are available from the website or by email from Carolyn@AngelsOverAmerica.com.

Carolyn K. Long, author of "Angels Over America" and co-producer of the 9/11 memorial video of that name, is a Professional Speaker, PR & Marketing Consultant, Writer and Photographer, based in Annapolis, MD.

The events of 911 will be a part of the American consciousness forever. How they are held there will shape our future.
