Seth Eisenberg, author of PAIRS Essentials, is co-author of the new book, The Laundry List of Relationship Mishaps, Knots and Double Binds: A Partial Registry of the Hazards of Intimacy.

The Laundry List, based on experience with thousands of couples at the point of separation, considers dozens of the most common, often unspoken, hidden expectations and assumptions that frequently lead to divorce. The author says three out of four divorces are preventable and hopes The Laundry List will help stem the tide of marriage and family breakdown.

Among the most common assumptions co-authors Gordon and Eisenberg explore: "If you loved me, you would know what I want and do it. Since you don't, you obviously don't care"

Another: "When you're in pain, I believe I should be able to fix it. I don't know how to fix it, so I distance from you and blame you when you're in pain"

The original laundry list was penned as a five-page handout by Eisenberg's mother, pioneering Washington, D.C. marriage and family therapist Lori Heyman Gordon, in 1979. Dr. Gordon died in 2019. Purpose Built Families Foundation, where Eisenberg serves as President/CEO, published the updated book, dedicated in its original and updated format to Virginia Satir, as a tribute to Dr. Gordon.

The updated 114-page edition is illustrated by artist Rae Mate.

Beyond identifying and reconstructing the most common landmines that sabotage love relationships, The Laundry List includes an exercise to help couples create new possibilities for understanding, closeness and deeper experiences of intimacy, Eisenberg says.

"Seventy five percent of divorces are preventable," Eisenberg stresses. "These insights will help many couples discover challenges worth overcoming and a roadmap to greater happiness"

Seth Eisenberg will answer these frequent relationship questions:

1.     Why can't I stand the person I once loved?

2.     Is happily ever after even possible?

3.     Why do you call traditional marriage vows the biggest lie?

4.     Is marriage a dead institution?

5.     What's the biggest predictor of divorce?

Eisenberg is available to discuss these questions as well as other topics surrounding intimacy, relationships, parenting, marriage and divorce, including signs your relationship may be in trouble and what you can do about it.
