Using Stats to Learn about Connections

At one time, The Publishing Connection (www.thepublishingconnection.com) which connects writers to publishers, agents, and the film industry could only tell the success of writers and filmmakers in making connections by the number of responses they reported to the company.  But not all writers and filmmakers provided reports, even when they got dozens of responses or entered into deals with publishers and film producers.

Now The Publishing Connection has been able to use stats and analytics to chart the level of success of each mailing for every client and of its own test mailings to different databases of publishers, agents, film producers, distributors, children's book publishers and agents, and the media.  That's because the measurement technology is now available to show these results.

For example, after 100% of the mailings are sent out (as indicated by the stats), about 90-95% of the book publishers and literary agents receive these mailings, according to the stats which measure email deliveries.   And about 70-75% of recipients open their emails, a relatively high rate of opens according to email professionals, but a reason for this is that this is the email database is highly targeted to publishing professionals who are looking for new material.  Approximately the same stats are recorded for children's book publishers and agents.

However, in the film industry, which is much more competitive, the stats show a delivery rate of about 86% to producers and 80% to film agents and managers, with an open rate of about 66-68% for both.  Again, the rate is generally high, but a little lower, since film producers and agents/managers are more selective in what they want to see than book publishers and agents.  And book publishers and agents are more likely to respond even to say they are not interested, whereas film producers and agents tend to only respond if interested.

As for the media, the company plans to research the stats for that next in the five media areas in which it does mailings to editors and producers – newspapers, magazines, the Internet media, radio, and TV.

Given this high response rate, the company has been expanding globally, due to the worldwide interest in contacting major publishers and film producers, who are based primarily in the U.S., though growing rapidly in other countries.  For example, the company's latest clients were from Norway, Australia, and Indonesia, and in the past, there have been clients from many other countries worldwide, though most clients are still based throughout the United States.  The company itself is now based in four U.S. locations – San Francisco, Lafayette, California, Grosse Ile, Michigan, and in Los Angeles to handle PR connections with the major print, Internet, and broadcast media.

Besides helping writers make connections by email with the publishing, film, and media industries, the company's writers help the writer write a good letter and assist with proposals, scripts, and self-publishing print-on-demand and e-books.

The Company's Creative Director, Gini Graham Scott, has even sold nine of her books through using the service, including The New Middle Ages and Remember This to be published by Nortia Press, Turn Your Dreams into Reality to be published by Llewellyn Worldwide, and What Kind of Dog Are You? to be published by Touchstone Press, all to be released in 2014.  The other books will be out in 2015.
