Share Jaspreet's personal story on behalf of funding teens to come to the Summit in Aliso Viejo next month.

Background About IYMS:

IYMS is a yearly Summit which brings together teen filmmakers and teen diplomats from around the world to explore ways to inspire and empower their generation to shape the future through media and action.

The International Youth Media Summit was founded in 2006 by Evelyn Seubert and James Gleason, teachers at The Cleveland High School Media Academy in Reseda, California and Aileen Marshall of Screen School in Scotland. All three teachers are deeply dedicated to expanding the perspective of their students, exposing them to global issues, and empowering them to find solutions. Out of that desire the first Summit was born, held in LA in the summer of 2006. The impact was great and the Summit gained momentum, influencing not just their own students but young people from all over the world. The 2nd Summit was then hosted by Australia in 2007, and the 3rd by The Media Education Center in Belgrade, Serbia in 2008.

Organized by IYMS Executive Director Miomir Rajcevic, the MEC in Belgrade has graciously and successfully hosted every Summit since. In 2014, the founders are excited to be bringing the 9th IYMS back to Los Angeles.

From a young producer and news writer's desk today:

From Jaspreet Kaur:

I have a story to share with you, here it goes:

I am many things but none of the labels except for Jaspreet Kaur, 16 year old immigrant from India really identifies me. This is not a story about a helpless girl who immigrated to America and is on the receiving end of a proper education. Yes, it is about those things but more importantly, it is about the things I aspire to do now that I have access to so much more. I am interning for the International Youth Media Summit, a two week gathering from July 14th to July 26 at SOKA University in Aliso Viejo. The Summit will bring together young filmmakers and diplomats from 24 countries to use media to empower others to take action on social issues.

The goal of the Summit hit a little too close to home. The Summit is trying to empower young people, like me, to absorb what happens around us and respond to it. Out of the seven social issues (violence, poverty, discrimination, health challenges, the environment, and obstacles to women's rights and youth empowerment) women's rights instantly drew me in.

When I was born, my father's family was utterly disgusted at the thought of another girl and I would have become an abortion statistic. Today, I am the youngest, (and a female!) executive producer for Cleveland High School's live broadcasting news channel.

Throughout the years, I fell in love with filming because through media we can revolutionize the thinking and perceptions of the world. I want to inspire others to not sit and wait for change because that would be too easy and change would take its sweet time.

My mother is a woman of tradition and had an arranged marriage with my father. The ideal is one son and one daughter. The bravery of my mother is my most valuable possession because she stood up in a time when society poured gasoline and burned mothers along with their children, alive. I am grateful for the chance my mom took on me and I want to give that chance to others through the Summit. The Summit allows me to connect with the youth from other nations that are facing similar problems.

Many of the delegates coming to the Summit carry stories like mine. Mohamed from Sierra Leone was a child soldier, kidnapped to fight a war that he didn't understand. Grown men come back from war with scars and he was a child. Now he is a warrior armed with a camera, using film to speak against violence. Susan from Afghanistan wants to empower woman in her hometown of Herat by creating business opportunities for them.

She wrote, "During the Taliban regime a piece of Art was counted as proof of a serious crime, now it can play a huge role in bringing peace to our country." For me, the Summit represents a place where Susan, Mohammad, we all can share our stories instead of locking them away in a deep corner of the mind; instead, we can chose to do something.

Delegates are coming from Serbia, Bosnia, Slovenia, Armenia, and Israel, Palestine, Iran, Nigeria and 16 other countries.

These kids, that I haven't met yet, inspire me to conquer the world and make it a safer place for the next generation.   Impossible, right?

Nope, it starts with things like the International Youth Media Summit. Yes, it is painstakingly hard to raise money.

Especially when during times,  the funding for the Balkan delegations was given to the flood victims instead, and the funding from other sources never came.

We do it anyway because seeing the drive and hope in the delegates' faces is empowering in itself.

We carry these transformed attitudes home with inspiration to continue making a difference.

Dear Press and Youth Media…..The first step in making a difference is spreading the word. Can you help me tell my story?   I'm thanking you ahead of time.

Sincerely,

Jaspreet Kaur

I give you permission to share my own personal story. Thank you.
