Are There Lessons in Halloween?

Did you learn anything about your job search when observing the kids during Halloween?

We took our kids trick-or-treating last night and it's funny to see how excited they get about Halloween. They get so excited about their costumes, getting together with their friends, and of course getting lots and lots of candy! They get to be someone else for a night. They get to be a superhero, a princess, a cowboy, a character from their favorite movie or even a made up character. Sounds kind of fun, doesn't it?

I have written many times about the lessons we can learn from kids. How they can be so focused when it comes to something they want. They do not quit! And last night during Halloween I witnessed it again. Door after door, knock after knock, they just kept pushing towards their goal of getting lots of candy! Do you know what they did when they knocked on a door that didn't open? They just went directly to the next door! And the next door and the next door! Nothing was going to get in the way of reaching their goal – getting lots of candy!

That's the way you have to be about your job search! Nothing should get in your way! Nothing! If you knock on a door and it doesn't open, go to the next door, and the next door and the next door! Don't stop! Did your kids stop trick-or-treating when someone didn't answer the door? No way! They kept going until someone answered the door, right?

That's what you should do! Keep knocking, keep looking, keep going until someone opens the door for you. The kids on Halloween night know if they keep knocking on doors someone will eventually open the door. If you try to pull them away from this process they will be very upset with you and they'll say, "Dad, I didn't try this house yet" or "I think someone's home" they will not stop knocking or trying will they? Besides they're on a mission and that mission is to get a lot of candy!

Your mission is to get an interview! And get hired! So be just like those kids on Halloween night! They don't stop looking for candy because the first door or the second or even the third door doesn't open. No way! Your mission is a lot more important than looking for candy, so act like it! Don't stop knocking! Don't give up! If the first door, or second, or even the third door doesn't open don't stop knocking!

The kids on Halloween night know eventually if they keep knocking on enough doors one will open. The same goes for you and your job search. Are there lessons to be learned from the kids on Halloween night? Absolutely! I hope this helps.

Good luck to you!
