With summer comes thunder storms and certain holidays that include fireworks. The loud noises that are generated can cause a lot of anxiety for your pet. There can be many reasons for your pet's sensitivity to these loud noises such as the change in barometric pressure, an electric or static shock or even a genetic predisposition. Whatever the reason, an owner's main concern is to comfort his or her pet or relieve the stress it causes.
Some dogs find comfort in a "safe place" where he or she can cope with these noisy events such as a dark or tightly enclosed space. This may be a small room, underneath a piece of furniture, or access to his or her own crate.
Training a dog to do a specific task as a distraction can also give them a sense of security. It can be something as simple as teaching them to clean up their scattered toys and putting them in a basket, or exchanging a toy for a treat. Making a dog think about a specific task helps them to ignore other stimuli by keeping them focused and less anxious.
According to Jonathan Lewis, President of
COOL PET Holistic, a manufacturer of holistic remedies for pets, it is important to stay calm and use a distraction technique that works best for your pet.
While against our own instincts, do not acknowledge your pet's discomfort during a noisy event. When you speak soothingly and pet or hold your pet, your dog will take it as a signal that you approve of his or her stressed behavior.
