CRITICAL TIPS FOR HOTEL GUEST THEFTS
CLEARWATER, FL, MAY 21, 2011: You've checked-in, unpacked, showered and gotten a good night's sleep. It's the next morning. You'll leave your room and your personal items, some of which are either important to your trip or are expensive or impossible to replace.
In some cases, the hotel provides a room safe. You've seen them. They're often placed in the closet. All you need to do put in your secret electronic code and lock your stuff away safely. Not so fast.
The hotel's staff needs to be able to override your secret code in cases where the guest has forgotten his private code. This process is known by many of the hotel's staff. Current and ex-employees will likely know this procedure and can open your in-room safe stealing everything.
There's always the opportunity to use hotel's safety deposit boxes. This system probably works best but can be terribly inconvenient.
According to crime statistics, out of every 100 hotel guests, 1.78 will have some or all of their personal and business items stolen every day. And the thieves are not just dishonest employees or ex-employees.
Have you ever noticed that the room cleaning staff keeps the room doors open while they're cleaning? A professional thief will boldly walk into the room claiming to be the guest, open a few drawers, take what he wants, and scoot away with your stuff.
So let's talk about what you're going to do to help stop any potential losses.
We've talked about using the in-room safe and the safety deposit boxes. Here are some more thoughts….
After the cleaning crew has been to your room, leave the "Do Not Disturb" sign hanging on the door knob. Leave the television or radio on. In other words, make the room appear to be occupied.
Laptop computer security cables that you can get at Radio Shack or Brookstone stores work nicely. The thief can't steal your computer without ruining it.
I found a great item on the Internet called "My Drawer Lock". This device clamps onto a typical drawer. It's locked and unlocked using a PIN code which you set. Anyone who tries opening the drawer without using the proper PIN code gets an earful of loud siren screaming. When you arrive at your hotel room, you just put your "My Drawer Lock" in place, put your important papers, jewelry, camera, laptop, etc., in the drawer, close the drawer, push the lock button, and voila, the drawer is locked.
Unfortunately, this device is brand new. While it is patented, it's not on the market yet.
I called the inventor / designer, Jim McLane in Tarpon Springs, FL. He's a cabinet maker and general contractor by trade. He told me, "Lots of clients have asked for a drawer lock for their chest of drawers at home. So I decided to create such a device that you can use at home or take with your when you travel."
"I spent over 2 years designing My Drawer Lock. I went through the whole U.S. Patent ordeal. Got the patent. Now I'm ready to get it built and sold," he continued.
Now that he's ready to get his device manufactured, Jim has decided to partner with a qualified manufacturer / marketer rather than to build the device himself. "Why re-invent the wheel?" he asks. "So I'm searching for someone or some company already in the business to work with," he concluded.
If anybody out there wants to get on board with Jim, you can contact me, Bill Thompson, at
