COOL PET Holistic Remedies Demystifies Supplement Labels for Consumers

There are numerous ways in which pet (and human) supplement manufacturers confuse consumers with labeling. This article show consumers how to simply and quickly get the facts from a supplement label, so consumers can make an informed purchasing decision.

Ingredients

When first deciding to provide your pet with a non-prescription remedy or supplement, first determine which specific ingredients you are looking for. Do your own research or ask your vet for suggestions. For example, the best ingredients for joint care products are glucosamine, MSM, and hyaluronic acid. So, look for products that contain one or more of these ingredients first. Beware of all the "eye of newts" out there. Many untested and even unapproved ingredients are put into formulations (e.g. Yucca) that have no hard independent data proving any benefit to your pet. Manufacturers and marketers often make these ingredients sound like wonder drugs when in fact the claims made are completely unsubstantiated. How can marketers and manufacturers get away with this? It is all an odds game. The FDA simply does not have the resources to police most pet supplement manufacturers unless an issue arises and makes the evening news. As COOL PET Remedies' sister company Advanced Biomedical Consulting (ABC), specializes in regulatory compliance consulting, COOL PET Holistic Remedies is offering consumers to contact an ABC representative here for FREE should you have any questions regarding the safety and regulatory status of ingredients in your pet's remedies or supplements

Amount of Active Ingredient in the Correct Dose

After you have determined which active ingredients you are looking for, it is time to compare levels of those ingredients in different candidate products. While this may sound simple, there are many marketing tricks that can steer you in the wrong direction.

With most approved supplement ingredients, the worry of overdosing is relatively minimal. However, you should keep an eye out of extremely high doses of any one ingredient in one product as compared to other products with that ingredient. While it may not be harmful to your pet, you may be wasting money as many of these supplements are water soluble with the "extra" not being used by your pet at all (i.e. excess is simply excreted). For example, any product with more than 800 mg of MSM in a daily dose is potentially wasting the extra money you may have spent for this product as the extra MSM is most likely residing on your lawn.

Don't stop the detective work here! You may see a very competitive 1000 mg of glucosamine listed on the label. Many times, marketers and manufacturers list this "magic number" for an active ingredient when it does not apply to the actual level in a typical dose. For example, one competitive product in the market lists a whopping 4000 mg of glucosamine in a single 1 ounce dose! However, when you read the feeding instructions panel on the label (an FDA requirement for labeling), it shows that the recommended dose is only 1/4 ounce. So, truly the product is offering 1000 mg per day. COOL PET Holistic Remedies simplifies dosing. COOL PET's levels of active ingredient are specified in the typical daily dose for your pet. For example, with COOL DOG Joint Remedy, the company lists the active ingredients per a 1 ounce serving. And guess what? 1 ounce is exactly what the company recommends for most dogs! So, break out your calculator and check out the level of active ingredient in the product per the actual dose your pet would be using each day.

Cost

Here is where the real fun begins and where paying attention in math class finally pays off. Two things concern (or should concern) most consumers, i.e. total price and price per day. Manufactures and marketers use a myriad of techniques to confuse buyers with relation to price.

For example, one product on the market retails for $8.99 for an entire 30 tablet bottle. 30 days for $8.99? Not bad, right? Wrong! If you read the small print, most large dogs will require 4 tablets daily. Therefore, this clearly inferior tablet type product lasts only 7 days and costs more than most products of much higher quality and higher concentration of active ingredients. No deal here.

As another example, a decent product currently on the market retails for $79.99. When the correct dosage per day is figured out, this product comes out to an average of $ .88/day. So, while a bit costly up front, the price/day is within reason, an important decision factor. The problem here is that the palatability of this chewable product is pretty poor. Therefore, pet owners struggle with feeding the product or waste a good amount of money upfront because the dog won't eat it! COOL PET Remedies suggests that you find a product that is offered in both a low upfront cost "trial" size AND an economy size and that offers multiple flavors such as COOL DOG Holistic Joint Care Formulas. This way, you can be sure to save money for a product that both you and your pet love.
