Toronto

Love the look of crisp cool white, but find yourself holding back from buying it? Here are the top 4 myths about wearing white, and 4 good reasons you should embrace it this summer.

1. White Will Make Me Look Fat

It's true that dark colors, like black, that absorb light do make you look thinner, but don't assume that means that wearing white will make you look like a giant white whale. A column of white from head to toe is not only chic but very flattering, no matter what your size. Pair a breezy linen tunic with a white narrow pant, cute white gladiator sandals and you'll look tall and slim. Texture is important to a monochromatic look, so mix up your materials to avoid looking boring.

2. White Washes Me Out

If you're on the fair side and you don't tan, there's a real fear that white is too stark, and will make you look pale and sick. So instead, think of white as a beautiful canvas upon which you can add a burst of color, in the way of pretty costume jewelry, or a great scarf. White naturally lights up your face. Add some colorful accessories, and you'll glow.

3. White has Such a Short Season

We grew up being told, no white before the end of May or after Labor Day. Old rule! While white cotton pants in mid- January in N.Y. may be taking it too far, a white fitted top with jeans and a cute jacket can look perfectly at home any season. Still not sure you'd get enough wear during the year to make white worth the investment ? Then wait until July when sidewalks begin for white clothing, at huge discounts, that you can enjoy all summer long.

4. White Gets Dirty

If worry about this, you're probably also the type of person who has a china cabinet full of beautiful dishes you have never used. Live a little! Yes, white gets dirty, but there's always the washing machine and a little bleach. Don't fear traveling with white either. It's a fabulous basic that can be dressed up or down depending on what you pair with it so, it is actually extremely versatile for traveling when you need to create a several looks out of a few pieces.
