The American Kennel Club (AKC) announced that they will be recognizing three new exotic canine breeds. The breeds, the Cane Corso, Leonberger and Icelandic Sheepdog will be allowed to compete next year in the annual Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show, held in Madison Square Garden in New York City. The AKC announced this news exclusively to the Today Show.

"It's great: We're adding three new dogs to our registry," AKC spokeswoman Christina Duffney said. "As of Wednesday, they're able to compete in shows and take part in any AKC activity."

Although the breeds are just now officially recognized, all three breeds have been around for ages. The Leonberger, hails from the Germany and is named after the town of Leonburg. The canine has luxurious long fur, a large stature and a cheery disposition. The Icelandic sheepdog, is among the old breeds in the world, part American Eskimo and chow, and can be traced back to the Vikings. The Cane Corso, of mastiff lineage, is an affectionate companion, used often for hunting and protection.

Founded in 1884, the AKC is the only non-profit registry of pure-bred dogs and is the most widely known and respected registries in the United States.
