Flooding, water damage and mold are really an ugly mess to deal with. At the National Genealogical Society meeting this year I was given two treasures photo albums that were caught in the rain on the front drive way, in a cardboard box during a move. Mold is everywhere, inks ran, colors in photos smooshed and the average person would think that the only thing to be done is throw the whole mess away. What a heartbreak! In fact everyone that I showed the albums to at the conference cringed at the thought of such a thing happening to them.
My purpose at www.saveyourstuff.com is to help people avoid this kind of damage. And if it happens, then the only option is NOT to just throw it away! How To Save Your Stuff From A Disaster has many suggestions for salvaging damaged items.
What about your workplace or business? Home based businesses are extreme risk.
Last month there were horrible storms in New England and Rhode Island was hit particularly hard with flooding, water damage and mold. According to FEMA, more than 2,000 people remain out of their homes, and many businesses are still closed. The torrential rainfall that left a large portion of the state underwater, and officials say the total costs from damage as a result of the Great Flood of 2010 will exceed $200 million.

This does not require an all out effort to get ready. The process of preparing can be done in stages and by priorities. Most all of the things that can be done to better prepare are low cost, low tech and even logical. The preparation efforts can be done right in the home or office. But, as your Preservation Coach, having been through this process a number of times, I can stream line the process, make it more efficient and help a company or family in many ways that are not obvious.
The mayor of Providence, David Cicilline, said "it is clear that the current (civic) system often does not provide the help needed, especially by small businesses.'' So where can your business find help? Be self empowered. Don't wait for the government to get "a program" going for you.
