"Workplace disharmony is often overlooked by CEOs especially in small businesses, says CEO Advisor and Dallas Management Consultant, Linda Hanson, CMC, because of the family atmosphere within the company. "
Hanson, who has worked with many companies for over 25 years, believes that recognizing the signs of disharmony should be a high priority. She suggests identifying the things that not only have a negative effect on morale but impact accomplishing the goals of the company. For example, "Employees who are not polite, don't accept assistance from other staff, don't cooperate or collaborate on projects with other staff, are possessive about their work or don't take pride in their work are in need of help," says Hanson.
"Companies have the responsibility and right to assign supervision of an employee who is falling short of expectations in the workplace," says Hanson. She suggests immediately taking corrective action which can range from additional training to prioritizing duties and setting standards. "Once the problem has been identified it is helpful to develop a Performance Improvement Plan for the employee," Hanson explains.
"Workplace performance should never be overlooked," says Hanson. Hanson believes that Performance Improvement Plans should outline the key deliverables that are expected and their measures of success. Plans should be reviewed in an agreed upon time frame. "Make sure the goals are challenging but not impossible to achieve. By giving an employee a strong, supportive environment, with key expectations, many CEOs find out that their employee can be successful and become a valuable asset to the company," says Hanson.
