Mies van der Rohe's "Resor House": For Sale in Winterport, Maine
While at Cornell University Medical College in New York City in the early 60's, I fell in love with the inescapable drama of the Seagram's Building, designed by Mies van der Rohe and Philip Johnson.
With its unbroken height of bronze and glass, I decided at that time I would build a Glass House during my lifetime, on a spectacular site on the shore of the mighty Penobscot River.
In the Fall of 2004 I started a course of therapy for cancer.
It was time to build my Glass House, inspired by the Resor House and designed by the revolutionary Bauhaus architect Mies van der Rohe in 1937 to straddle a creek in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.
Although the Resor House was never built, the spirit of the original design was brought to life in the Glass House in Winterport, Maine, a one-of-a-kind, 3,300+ SF house, which is only 11 miles from Bangor.
It is not for everyone.
It requires an appreciation for panoramic views, riverfront and hot tub decks, Zen gardens, a monolith from 2001 A Space Odyssey, a cook's kitchen, superb bedrooms and master suite, creative lighting, the finest of building techniques and materials, and above all,
glass My therapy is over and the prognosis is amazingly good. We have enjoyed the house and its environs for the past four years, and it is now time to sell it to a qualified buyer, one who has great insights and taste.
I will be moving on to a related, and smaller project: to build an adaptation of Philip Johnson's Glass House in Connecticut. (I think that I am in some sort of a rut here!)
The Glass House must be experienced to be appreciated.
