Celebrate the Fall of the Berlin Wall - and Tear Down Your Own Wall

A Berliner Who Lived in East Germany -- and Knows the Best and Worst of Humanity -- Recalls the Fall of the Berlin Wall 20 Years Ago and Shares Her Experience to Help Others.

By Adele Landauer

Yes, it is the 20th anniversary of the peaceful revolution and of the night of the fall of the Berlin Wall. I remember it as if it were yesterday, and I remain euphoric about the courage of my people.

Today, Nov. 9, 2009, we have reconstructed the Berlin Wall -- in huge colorful domino pieces which will fall in sequence and other pieces made from rich chocolate to be tasted. Today, the City of Berlin is filled with politicians representing many nations as well as thousands of everyday people from all over the world.

Today is indeed cause for a wonderful celebration. And today -- the day of Germany's freedom -- is also the day of my personal freedom. Recovering from a leg injury, I have been told by my doctor that I no longer need crutches. Yes, what a day to learn to walk again and to party all night.

In 1989, I witnessed first-hand the fall of the Berlin Wall. It was once an indestructible symbol for a divided globe and was torn down to the disbelief of millions overnight. I evoke this amazing example of success to inspire audiences to change in the same way . . . overnight. Just as the Germans liberated themselves, so can you.

Having experienced life on both sides of the Berlin Wall, I observed on that historic night not only a wall being torn down physically but also millions of people tearing down their own personal walls. All the ideas they had about life, work, politics, culture and society -- on both sides of the wall -- suddenly collapsed.

Germans were able to let these limitations fall away just as the Berlin Wall did. They were finally free to consider a new way of living. Let this historic and momentous occasion show you that every barrier and obstacle in life at anytime can be torn down and destroyed just as the once mighty Berlin Wall was. This is the inspiration from the Berlin Wall that lives on.
