Warren Buffett, CEO of Berkshire Hathaway, invited Janet Tavakoli, author of Dear Mr. Buffett, to sign books at the Berkshire Hathaway Annual Meeting in Omaha on Saturday, May 2, 2009. Dear Mr. Buffett is the book that explains that the global financial meltdown was caused by a massive Ponzi scheme between failed mortgage lenders and Wall Street. Tavakoli explains the cause was not bad models or mathematical outliers, but outright liars. There were no black swans, just Black Barts who cooked up phony securitizations in Wall Street's financial meth labs. Like legendary highwayman, they made off with the loot without ever firing a shot. Book signings at the Annual Meeting are invitation-only events, and the meeting drew record crowds.
Ms. Tavakoli is the president of Tavakoli Structured Finance, a Chicago based consulting firm. She is also a long-time Berkshire Hathaway (BRKA) shareholder.
Warren Buffett signed a copy of Dear Mr. Buffett for Ms. Tavakoli earlier in the year:
To Janet – Who should have been listened to much more carefully in the past---& who will be in the future –

Dear Mr. Buffett, What an Investor Learns 1,269 Miles from Wall Street, explains the events leading up to the worst financial meltdown in world history. Tavakoli shows how she and Warren Buffett predicted the meltdown well in advance, warned investors, and propose how to fix it. Tavakoli also explains how to prevent it from happening again. Dear Mr. Buffett is a witty well-told account of how principle triumphs over greed and panic, and is a must-read for all those seeking the timeless wisdom that has beaten, and continues to beat, the market.
