]]>Many of my patients ask me why their stomach growls. Is it just because they’re hungry? Or could it be a sign of something more serious? The simple answer is both yes and no.

What is Stomach Growling?

Stomach growling is the result of a process called migrating motor complex (MMC). MMC is waves of electrical activity that sweep through the intestines in a regular cycle during fasting, causing peristalsis. Peristalsis is waves of muscle contractions that move and push the contents of the digestive tract continually downward, moving along any food, fluid, gasses and air. As all these ingredients get pushed around and broken down into easy-to-absorb pieces, pockets of air and gas also get squeezed and create the noises we hear and call “growling.” Because of this process, stomach growling can happen at any time, not just when you’re hungry. However, if there’s food in your stomach or small intestine, the growling becomes quieter and less likely that you will hear it.

Now, I know what you are thinking – If “growling” is not due to hunger, why are there times in which you felt hungry and heard your stomach growling? This occurs because about 2 hours after you finish eating, your brain gets the signal to start peristalsis again, resulting in the digestive muscles contracting to clear out any food and matter that was missed the first time. As this happens, the vibrations of the empty stomach signal to your brain that you are hungry. These contractions occur approximately every hour, lasting about 10-20 minutes until you eat again.

Can Stomach Growling be an Indicator of a Medical Issue?

Although stomach growling is a completely normal process, there are times in which it could signal something else. Excess gas, stomach bloat and underlying gastrointestinal problems may all be the cause of excessive stomach growling, signaling that your food is not digesting as it should. If you feel that you have excessive stomach growling, you should see your doctor.

For most of us, stomach growling is a perfectly normal function and one that occurs throughout most of the day. It’s just a reminder that your body is always working to keep you in top shape, whether you’re hungry or not!

]]>Atrantil customer testimonial from Naomi in Austin, TXAfter nearly 10 years of being gluten-free and 5 years of living the paleo lifestyle, I was heartbroken when my food choices were no longer providing relief to my chronic abdominal pain, brain fog, adult acne, histamine reactions and mood stabilization issues. I had gotten to a point where I was reacting the everything I ate except for boiled meat and chicken bone broth. My reactions were debilitating and devastating. I had lower abdominal pain that would not subside, I couldn’t think straight and my skin continued to get worse. I not only struggled with acne, but I began developing bumps on my arms and on my legs and food seemed to trigger strange mood and neurological responses. I was at a loss of what to do.

As a leader in the paleo community, this was disheartening for me. I had committed my life to healing chronic health issues, but I was no longer staying well. After struggling and declining, I performed some tests and was positively diagnosed with SIBO. I had the blessing of interacting with a customer at Picnik who told me she had tried Atrantil after her doctor diagnosed her with SIBO and she said her results were nothing short of miraculous. I decided to order it and give it a shot.

Two weeks ago, I had to prepare some food for our Thanksgiving feast for the business. I was faced with the devastating reality that I was going to have to taste test all of our food to ensure it was properly prepared for customers. I was terrified. I knew that if I tried our menu, I would feel bad for several days, as I had been reacting to eggs, nuts, sugar, dairy, etc., and all of these ingredients were present in the items I had to taste. I decided to try the Atrantil prior to the tasting, as I prayed it would alleviate some of the discomfort that I anticipated experiencing.

What happened next was shocking and life changing. I did not have a single reaction to the food that I ate. I figured it was a freak accident. I didn’t believe that what I was experiencing was possible. The next several days, I began integrating and testing several foods that I had eliminated from my diet. I was doubtful that the Atrantil would continue working, but I was wrong! It has been two weeks now, and I haven’t had a single reaction to the food I’ve eaten. On Thanksgiving, I ate an incredible spread of food including an incredible crab & artichoke dip that I made with artisan cheese and served with a homemade rice flour baguette, and I have had NO NEGATIVE REACTION. I have cried several times from pure joy! I feel like I have my life back. I am able to finally function, enjoy time with my fiancé and enjoy the food I’m eating.

In addition to alleviating digestive discomfort, the acne on my face has gone away 100% and the bumps on my legs have also disappeared. My neurological responses to food have stopped and my mood has stabilized. Everything feels different. I will continue to eat gluten-free and high-fat, as it makes me feel and perform my best, but it is a blessing to simply be able to eat again.

I am grateful for Atrantil for giving me my life back. I am recommending it to everyone. Do yourself a favor, and order it now!

]]>As most of you know, we set out eight years ago to find a treatment for my patients who came to me complaining that they looked nine months pregnant from bloating and who had horrible IBS-C symptoms. At the time, there was really no effective treatment out there and we saw the need. We decided to make something all natural that would not only take away these IBS symptoms, but also be really good for you; enhanced with flavonoids, anti-oxidants, and other great properties, such as anti-inflammatory agents. We wanted to make something here, in the US, with only the purest ingredients that we would be proud to stand behind. That was how Atrantil was born.

Holding to this standard, we decided that even though it was not required, we wanted to hold it to FDA standards and run clinical trials on our new product. Many of you have asked about these trials and finally we can share our excitement. For all of you wanting to know about our clinical trials, we have great news! Our pilot study on Atrantil was such a success, that we were just published in The Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology Research.

We conducted a Two Week, Double Blind, Randomized, Placebo-Controlled Study on Atrantil to determine the safety and efficacy in patients with IBS-C. The inclusion criteria included patients diagnosed with IBS-C at least 6 months prior to randomization. The patients were randomized into the Atrantil treatment arm or the placebo arm for a treatment period of two weeks. We measured overall Quality Of Life (QOL) as well as Constipation and Bloating Scores before and after treatment. The patients were able to take Atrantil on an as-needed basis up to three times per day.

We are happy to report that we saw outstanding results! When the statistical analysis was done, the p-value was less than 0.001 for all scores. What that means is that the results we saw were statistically significant. An astonishing 90% of the patients on Atrantil saw improvement. The overall QOL was 70% greater for those on Atrantil than those on placebo. The bloating scores improved by 58% and constipation improved by 31%. This was a tremendous showing, considering pharmaceuticals are only 8-10% better than placebo when approved by the FDA.

During the study, we also had no adverse events reported by any of the patients. This is because the ingredients are all natural and actually great for you!

We are really excited to share this data with you and encourage you to read the actual publication in The Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology Research . We hope you share our excitement and help spread the word about the benefits of Atrantil. Along with your help, we hope to improve the world’s digestive health one tummy at a time!

]]>When people are treated for Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), some may experience a Die-Off reaction. This term is thrown around a lot, but what exactly is Die-Off? What does it mean?

Die-off reaction is shorthand for a Herxheimer reaction (Jarisch-Herxheimer reaction), also known as herx or herxing. This term was coined to describe what Karl Herxheimer observed when he administered drugs to patients. Herxing was originally observed in patients with acute infections such as syphilis who received mercury treatment (a weak antibiotic).

The reaction occurs when toxins from injured or dying pathogens (viruses, bacteria, parasites, candida, etc.) overwhelm the body’s natural ability to clear them out. The liver, which is the body’s main pathway for eliminating toxins, becomes overwhelmed by the amount of endotoxins released into the blood and tissue. The release of toxins is faster than the body can comfortably handle and thus provokes a sudden and exaggerated inflammatory response.

The treatment of many bacterial infections is known to provoke a Herxheimer reaction. For example, in the infamous anthrax attacks, people died by the time they got to the hospital. This occurred because anthrax organisms (unlike most other organisms) multiply very quickly. When treated with an anti-bacterial medicine, the organisms had multiplied to the point where killing them overwhelmed the body with a high concentration and rapid introduction of toxins into the bloodstream. This overload of toxins on the body ultimately resulted in death.

A 1980 study of the Herxheimer reaction found the following: “One phenomenon deserving emphasis is seen occasionally when therapy is initiated. It suggests the Herxheimer reaction … The reaction is usually limited to a flu-like syndrome of mild generalized aching and low-grade fever, but may also encompass an exacerbation of the patient’s allergic manifestations.” [1]

People experiencing Die-Off reaction often report feeling as if they have the flu or a cold. The whole body is generally sluggish and usually feels as if it is working harder – almost fighting something. There is an array of symptoms associated with Die-Off, including:

  • Nausea
  • Headache
  • Fatigue
  • Dizziness
  • Brain fog
  • Lethargy
  • Depression or Anxiety
  • Insomnia
  • Swollen glands
  • Increased GI problems (bloating, gas, constipation or diarrhea)
  • Increased joint or muscle pain
  • Elevated heart rate
  • Chills, cold feeling in your extremities
  • Body itchiness, hives or rashes
  • Sweating
  • Fever
  • Skin breakouts/ acne
  • Recurring vaginal, prostate and sinus infections

Essentially, the immune system kicks up an inflammatory storm as toxins move through and out of the body causing all sorts of symptoms. Treatment with an anti-inflammatory agent may stop progression of the reaction. In most cases, taking an aspirin or Ibuprofen will generally help with the inflammatory response, thereby giving relief to the symptoms. Die-Off should be seen as a positive sign when treating bacterial infections. It indicates that the bad bacteria are literally dying off. For example, in the case of IBS associated with Small Intestine Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO), if you are treating it and start to experience Die-Off, you know that SIBO is the correct diagnosis. This means that Die-Off will run its course, end soon, and that you are close to relief from IBS issues!

]]>Many people get occasional bloating, whether it is from something they eat, swallowing too much air, or even women experiencing their monthly cycle. But why is it that some people get bloated and seem to stay bloated? If you have this problem, you know what I’m talking about. No matter what you eat or do your clothes never fit, you feel as though you look nine months pregnant, and it is just plain uncomfortable. If this is you, it is time you finally had some answers to why you are suffering.

The chronic bloating comes from a process called Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO). You may have heard the term SIBO, but what does that really mean and why does it cause the bloating?

In our bodies, the first part of the small bowel is called the duodenum. The duodenum is a sterile environment, meaning that unlike the colon, the duodenum is not supposed to have bacteria in it. For some unknown reason, our bodies can have a triggering event. A triggering event is something like a stress to our bodies, surgery, a high dose of antibiotics, etc. that can happen at any time. This triggering event tells the duodenum to slow down. The small bowel, which is normally like a free flowing stream, now slows down enough that bacteria are able to hang out in this area instead of flowing straight through.

Once the bacteria are in the duodenum, they feed off the starches you ingest. As they break down the starches, they give off Hydrogen gas. Once there is enough Hydrogen gas in the duodenum, it creates the perfect environment for another actor, called the archaebacteria, to come and hang out. This archaebacteria takes in Hydrogen and through an enzymatic reaction, it uses it as fuel and gives off another gas called Methane.

In the body Methane acts as a paralytic. So now the Methane slows down the flow of the duodenum even more. Where the duodenum was once a free flowing stream, we now have a stagnant pond which allows for even more bacteria to come in. More bacteria produce more Hydrogen which allows for more archaebacteria to enter, which give off more Methane. More Methane creates an even bigger stagnant pond in the duodenum, becoming a vicious cycle.

Once this cycle is in place, it is hard for the body to stop the cycle on its own. The continuation of this cycle is what causes some people to suffer from chronic bloating and abdominal discomfort. The bacteria are the main difference between people who have occasional bloating and those who have chronic. Once the body is able to rid the duodenum of the bacteria and archaebacteria, and return them back to where they belong- in the colon, the duodenum is then able to return to a free flowing stream and the body is able to function as normal. Which means you are able to fit back into your skinny clothes once again!
