Saving yourself or others may literally worth a conversation today, even if it ties up your morning with scenes of mayhem and ghoulish reality. Twenty million people are jumping in, jittering, and plying their skills or their options to get ready, alert and go about seismic activity and getting to safe ground.
Preparedness Now!- Find out how…….The Big Shakeout today generates chaos and conversation on purpose.
Shake and bake in California….a new worldwide assembly to learn, prevent, and inform in hot weather. Leading today is the Shakeout in our state, where we are joining with many other countries, islands, continents, and cities to understand the power of quakes. This is a "prepareathon" type of event with an empowering necessity to get ready, know what to do, know where to go and be supplied.
California has its happening today, October 15th with its epicenter at the Unversity of Southern California. In response to Northridge, San Francisco, and many other quakes, SCEC at USC has built a network of citizens, agencies, partners, schools, universities, preschools, … (http://shakeout.org/california/howtoparticipate/)
From their website:
"Millions of people worldwide will practice how to Drop, Cover, and Hold On at 10:15 a.m. on October 15* during Great ShakeOut Earthquake Drills, which began in California in 2008.
Participating is a great way for your family or organization to be prepared to survive and recover quickly from big earthquakes– wherever you live, work, or travel. ShakeOut is also a major activity of America's PrepareAthon!"
They have scenarios on the website, a video how to participate, there are resources. It's gone global! Drills used to be tiresome...this is not your old fashioned unconnected obligatory event. This is cool, fun, and connected to Earth Science, place, needs, and concerns with partners, narrative, 1 million LAUSD school students, and below fun songs and video to learn about the science of "The World Around Us" (CalRecycle/EEI curricula).
Find out more about how you can participate next year or use the day as a teachable moment to buy supplies for your emergency kit or use Youtube to learn history.
You will be making history as an action instead of a cry for help....by learning how to take care, be present, "drop, cover and wait".
