Can we reduce gun violence and mass public shooting in the U.S. by gun control alone?
Gun Control discussion driven by news cycles and real killings is back in the news.
Post Modern President comments on yet "Another Shooting"- Copycats killers and news feeds are terrible dancing partners leading more sorrow. Could gun owners pay insurance to take care of victims (liability insurance) for crimes that are ongoing? Is it a mental health issue or a political one that is causing death, maiming and mayhem? Is it a death wish, terrorism, or suicide projected through grandiose media enhanced fantasies? Is it hate crimes or just out of control anger? Do we teach anger management or self-esteem at school or make therapy available? There are too many questions and too many opinions. Are our students and teachers or professors safe or churches, synagogues, and mosques? Surely as the president has addressed this is intolerable and this is now everyone's problem.
What are the starting points to thoughtfully rethink how school or university shootings or public rampages? How can these mediated or prevented? Do we have a social problem with "gun mania" that values "shoot 'um up culture" and "what bleeds leads" instead of a mindful and aware context? Are there other cultures that could give us a hand?
Parents are not on the news like Madd in these killings because it doesn't drive traffic. We have anti bullying programs, but no socio emotive programming that follows on "Towards a state of self-esteem" a study from John Vasconcellos. (Zocalo Report and CDE findings)
What can communities do to bring responsible gun ownership and mental health programs to bear in a "jobless" economy and a "lonely" culture? What will change this death cult of "fame" and "competition" in shooters purchasing guns and planning mass violence against innocents? Here are some back up sources to explore. At almost 294 killings this year, we can't ignore this or leave the problem unaddressed and politicized.
The right to bear arms (in the constitution) is not the language that is driving this hateful self-expression. These angry, hateful gun-bearing shooters are citizens out of control. They are malevolent and at large. What can we do to change this cultural daily occurrence locally and nationally is a life or death matter….not a t.v. show or an opportunity for self-aggrandizement and celebrity …or part of the Hunger Games or another movie plot. We clearly need to team up and face this and get some help now.
"To explore and grow, human beings need a clear sense of structure. We need limits, guidance, and rules that are enforced consistently and fairly. These define an arena within which we feel secure enough to explore the world and ourselves. Knowing what our structure is lets us operate without fearing that our ventures will lead us into rejection, despair, or loss." From the report….
Time to get to work and look at options new and old to stop this "epidemic" of anger.
