"There are about 2.5 times the number of women age 65 years and over than men 65 years and over who are in nursing homes," shares Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance (AALTCI).   The Association regularly analyzes data for inclusion in the organization's 2015 Long-Term Care Sourcebook.  The 28-page compendium of research and industry data will be distributed in July.

"According to Census data, males were most likely to be concentrated in the 75 to 84 year old age group in skilled-nursing facilities," Slome shares.   Women were more

concentrated in the 85 to 94 year old age group followed by the 75 to 84 year old group."

Females were more likely to be in a nursing home as they aged compared with males.   In 2010, the U.S. Census shows that 3.9 percent of females 65 years and over were in skilled-nursing facilities compared with 2.1 percent of males 65 years and over.
