Cell phone cases come in all shapes, sizes, colors and designs. A new design, however, caught our attention at Firestorm. According to a USA Today article, the case resembles that of a handgun and is featured on the website Japan Trend Shop for $49.

The Ocean County Prosecutor's Office in Florida posted on Facebook Monday a photo of a gun handle hanging out of a woman's back pocket saying, "This cell phone case is not a cool product or a good idea."

They also went on to say, "A police officer's job is hard enough, without having to make a split second decision in the dark of night when someone decides without thinking to pull this out while stopped for a motor vehicle violation."

Apparently there is even an app that is a digital version of the gun and according to the website, "you can play games of Russian Roulette at parties!"

The Japanese-based website describes the phone case as: More a piece of equipment than a regular "cover," the Gun Grip Case transforms your iPhone 5 into a handgun! Available in black, white or pink, this fake "pistol" works with an app so you can interact with a digital version of the gun in the same color on your iPhone 5 screen. The app means you can play games of Russian Roulette at parties! Don't worry, you can't actually shoot anyone!

"You can't actually shoot anyone," however the appearance of a gun sticking out of a back pocket may cause terror and confusion. As a result, the case-owner could be mistakenly shot by someone who is actually carrying.

Every school campus must be aware of this product.

Firestorm Principal, Guy Higgins, weighed in on the topic of the case from a business POV:

While this may not be a problem of the first order for businesses, it could be a second order problem if someone comes to work with this handle attached to their phone. This reflects a gross failure to think ahead (Predict).  What is a police officer going to do if he sees a person pull this out of their pocket? This seems to be an excellent way to “get dead.”  

[Some states, including Florida are] not “open carry” states, so someone with this [phone case] “hanging out of their pocket” would be liable for arrest for violating the state law prohibiting openly carrying a weapon.

• • If I use this I will appear to be illegally carrying a weapon
  • A police officer might stop me
  • I might pull it out to show him/her
  • He/she is armed
  • He/she might shoot me in self-defense
  • At a range of a couple of feet, he/she will hit me
  • I could be dead
  • If I’m not dead, I will be doing a lot of major league hurting for a long time
  • Cute doesn’t compensate for either of the downsides

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to follow that trail.
